Hey guys,

So, I have almost confirmed my plans to head to London, (probably 1st week of June) But I was wondering, I am not buying a Eurail card or any equivalent, my plan is to hitchhike and take buses…do you think this is a good idea, I don’t really want to spend all that money on a train ticket, when I may be nowhere near train lines…plus, they are really expensive!
Are buses cheaper than trains? And do many people hitchhike? I’m wasn’t sure where to ask this question, so money matters seemed as good as any.

Cheers.

Are you planning to hit the "continent" in addition to the UK? Because the Eurail doesn't work in Britain, you have to have a BritRail pass. I don't recommend those though-- just take the coach. National Express has frequent, inexpensive coach journeys all over England, Scotland and Wales. And I think they may go to Ireland too.

As far as continental Europe goes, I don't think a Eurail pass is necessary. But it does make life easier in some cases. There's a company called EuroLines that has bus service all over the place, but honestly, for the amount of time it would take to be on a bus from, say, Rome to Paris, it may be more worth your while to shell out the extra dough to take the train and get there hours and hours quicker.

cheers for the info space virgin, yeah, i will be going to europe, but london is just my starting point.
i really dont mind taking hours longer, ive got $10,000NZD to take with me, and i will be going home after i run out of money, so the idea is to make my trip last as long as physically possible, so an extra couple of hours at a cheaper price, sounds bang on the money to me
