Question

Hey Guys,

I am looking for some per day costs to stay in South America and SE Asia as well. If you can break it by country that is great. I am just trying to gather some numbers from multiple sources so that I can get an average, then mark it up some. I am currently working on a round the world trip (West & East Europe, Asia, and South America) that will last at least a year and just need some rough numbers so I can come up with a savings target. I AM OPEN TO ANY AND ALL SUGGESTIONS FOR MY BUDGET. Please explain the numbers you provide.

Thanks!

foofiter

hey man SEA is dirt cheap too, a room should run you around 3-7 a night depending, food well if you eat in a restauraunt your lookin at about 3 bucks a meal but you can get a bowl o noodles for 50 cent. beer about 1.25 for a BIG bottle, smokes 1.50 your daily budget if your a heavy drinker should be around 15-20 a day but if you wanted to really rough this shit, you could get away with anywhere from 8-15 a day, its all about lifestyle man.

Wow thanks guys! Didn't realize it was so cheap down there! I am excited now! This will be on leg of my 1 year+ round the world trip that I am currently saving for.

I am open to more numbers and experiences from you other guys!

I know you've found a ressource, but here are my numbers anyway :

Laos :
food + lodging : 8 $- 15 $ (with one "self made" meal per day)

Vietnam :
food + lodging : 10 $ - 15 $

Nepal :
food + lodging : 8 $ - 20 $ (backpacker hotels range from 2 $ - 10 $ a night)

I haven't put the transport, but it's more than "affordable", especially if you use non touristic ones. For examle, in Laos, from Vientiane to Si Phan Don (south south) costed less than 10 $, including bus + tuktuk + pirogue to the island. Around 800 km but over 20 hours transportation !

Best tip for airfaire : buy in Bangkock !

Thanks a lot! That site is good but I like to hear what real people have done. Those are just averages. You guys give me a much better sense because we are all backpackers! Keep those numbers coming guys!

now in india, having my total budget set for 5 to 10 euros a day,
including everthing.
under 5 is possible.. if you dont buy souvenirs, stay at shitty places, travel lowest class (maybe some nighttrains or busses, they save one night hotel), eat on the street.
traveling cheap is easier if avoiding the big tourist places.. as in every other country.

dude, that's the exact trip that i am doing!!! I'm going to Asia, then Europe, then South America. But i'm only going for 4.5 months. I leave in 3 months so i'll let u know how it goes. I'm using the lonely planet budgets + a bit more as a rough guide for my budget, dunno how accurate they are though.

foofiter-

Depending on where in SEA you are going, my experience was around 10USD a day for a place to stay and food. The average was around 15-20 a day for room, food, transportation, and a few extras (drinks, entrance fees, cheap souvenirs). In SEA, you will save a lot of money if you’re traveling with others because you can split the cost of room and transportation.

If you’re going to Japan, it’s about 45USD a day for the bare minimum. Prices in Tokyo are comparable to Southern California and NYC. Cheapest rooms are around 30usd, cheap food around 5 (I’m talkin’ noodle houses and 7-11’s), subways rides around 2 dollars each transfer, and vending machine sodas around 1.50-2 dollars. This doesn't take in account for souvenirs, asahi and sake , train rides, entrance fees, and of course...sashimi.

My favorite travel guide is Let’s Go. The daily budget is very accurate for the budget traveler…much better than Lonely Planet in my opinion.

Hope this helps! A good piece of travel advice (I think from Let’s Go) is: when you’re finished packing, take only ½ the clothes and 2 times as much money.
