Thumbs up

I am trying to get a good number to go on. As many of you may know, I am planning to hit the road forever as soon as fiscally possible. I was planning to take $10,000 USD with me to start off. I obviously intend to live very cheaply, work as much as I can along the way, bum rides, whatever I have to do to get another day on the road and out of the rat race. So, if you were going to do this, how much would you start off with?

Thanks!

foofiter as you know I think that is awesome... if you really want to make it interesting leave with nothing but the shirt on you back...

that would be interesting but I don't know how much fun that would be. if you live cheap, never fly, hitch rides, stay with peopl you meet along the way... okay damn now I really want to go.. anyway back to the subject let's see

10,000
-250 <-- cheap plane ticket to somewhere in the off season
----------
9,750
/ 50 <-- Dollars per day
----------
195 <-- Day's you can survive on 10,000 with a 50$ a day budget if you could get by with a 25usd a day you would double that 390 days over a year. it's possible but it depends on where you are going to start

let us know when you finaly decide

I guess I should have detailed a little more. The $10,000 is after initial travel arrangements, gear, and other expenses. That will be what I have when I step onto the plane. I have officially decided and My target is March/April 2008. I will first hit Europe in that shoulder season for cheaper everything. Then on to Asia, Africa, Central/South America and wherever the road takes me. Trading, writing, working, photoing, and blogging my way around the world. I want to try out travel writing and other things as well. I will work in the hostels I stay to get free/discounted accomodation and whatever other kind of work I can find along the way. Hope that is enough info.

Thanks!

Keep in mind during harvest season (August thru early september) Farmers all over the world are generaly very willing to give you room and board in exchange for hard work. if you plan to travel the world over don't forget your roots and explore you're home as well... yes it's hard to belive but we do have some amazing sites that we shouldn't pass up.

I've always said that if I lost my job for some reason I would do what you are going to do... but dammit I just can't get fired

That is so true about exploring your hometown. Now that I'm leaving, I'm really trying to appreciate everything we have here. It's so beautiful really. Right on the Mississippi, lots of shops, bars, restaurants, cool people etc.

I think 10k is plenty to start on. Doing things like working under the table, hitchhiking, traveling in cheaper places, work exchange, etc...

It's good you have plenty of time to save and plan. I still might do it with no plans or money and see how far you could go.

Thanks guys. I will leave with $10k but I will act as if I have $1k and try to make it without touching it. This will force me to extend my trip as long as possible and see as much as possible. I just hope that I can hit my target of March 2008. I picked march so that the weather will be a lot nicer than winter but still cheap cos its not June yet. That leaves me 3 months to see what I wanna see in Europe and move on to other places. I hope some of you guys will make the leap and take a trip like this while you still can! (ie no kids or mortgage to worry about).

it sounds like such a cool trip but Europe is so expensive and thats coming from a European!! My friend nat went on a trip around the world excluding Europe and worked her ass off...she went out with about $7000 and still came home Ł3000 in debt

start saving!!

wow I had no idea that you were doing this. I love the idea!! I wonder if you would have trouble getting into countries with no return ticket or "plan".?? I wouldn't even know where to begin packing for a lifetime.!I'd prob start off just like it was a normal year away and then pick up things or downgrade along the way. Are you planning on living anywhere along the way?( besides those couple of months backpacker jobs)

happy planning and thx for the inspiration.

Cool

Thanks Dio! I have no intention to live anywhere unless the circumstances supply the need (IE I tech enlgish somewhere for a while). And to answer the return ticket issue: I can use my credit card to get a fully refundable ticket and then cancel it once I am in country. I can also use my credit card as a "plan" or "sufficient funds" for living. I am gald to hear that I am an inspiration!

WOW! Sounds like it will be some adventure.

Well there's always the kungfu example of doing nice things for people and depending on their charity, but you could try the anti-kungfu method of being a bollix and treating people like muck till they pay you to leave, that should sort your money and travel problems.

Since your such a kene writer I'm guessing there's a book in the works? Maybe you could make some money trough a website stick a few of those google adwords on it.

That couchsufers website would be handy for you not having to pay for any acommidation.
