Gee, Jake. Way to give advice.
Okay: Where are you going, when are you going and for how long are you going? And is the 1500 cdn way exorbitantly out of your budget or is it feasible? Here's what you want to do:
Lay out a plan of the traveling you think you might do. Divide the (approximate) number of trips by the cost of the railpass and see if the average price per trip seems worth it or not. Some journeys, like Rome to Paris, are fairly expensive; others really aren't. Especially in eastern Europe! And remember that anytime you take a longer journey you'll need to make a reservation, and the reservation fee can be anywhere between 3 and 20 euros, depending. Or an overnight train, if you want to stay in a couchette, may cost a little more. (My overnight couchette from Paris to Munich-- 1st class-- was only 22 euros with my railpass. Not too bad.)
You can check out train times & schedules and I think prices at http://www.bahn.de click on "international guests" for the english version.

Do you have to make reservations or is it more of a recommendation?

Jamie: On many journeys reservations are required. You will be able to tell because next to that journey on the schedule will be a little "R" in a box.

Why do Canadians get a better deal than USers. That's cheaper then I would pay for just 2 months unlimited. What a rip!
