I said partying...but wait here me out! i think the includes a lot. drinks (of course), cover charges, food at bars, taxi to and from club. So basically i think i spend the most money socializing.

The same with living at home when trying to save money, RENT or even worse, a MORTGAGE is the MOST expensive factor in the cost of living. What happened to the good old days when the community would join together and build a new house for a new family in a few days?

Guess where the word, "mortgage" comes from? Ancient Greece, "mort" means DEATH and "gage" means PLEDGE. So who gave so much importance to "buying" a house and having 20 or 30 year DEATH PLEDGE?

After my wirlwind trip in Europe last month, I seriously found that transportation was my main expence...back in the day it would have been da parties fo-shizzle, but now the buses, trains, ship, and plane that I took to get about really cost me the most...I think if I had of had a plan it maybe would have cost less, but prob not by much.

So for me, is the Transportation...(this time)

It was a toss up between partying and transport for me, but i ended up saying partying. While transport can be expensive, if you're travelling a little slower you don't require transport as often, which means it doesn't cost as much on a day to day basis. However, if you're doing the whirlwind thing, the cost of transportation would be quite large as you'd be travelling from place to place a lot more.

For us, it's accommodations, hands down. One of the drawbacks of traveling in packs is that you've still gotta pay for beds for everyone. Even hostels add up when you've got to pay for 6 beds. And here's another of the joys, I'm trying to find a place to stay in Belgium next week, and emailed a hostel. They sent back that they could give me a room, but I'd have to pay for all the beds in the room, even though we don't need them all. The privacy is considerate for both us and others in the hostel, but they won't consider putting us in a 4-bed room (even though two of the kids could share). So one night's accommodation still looks like about 65-70 Euro - at a hostel! That's why we like budget hotels so much - at least you get your own bathroom!

Transportation in country still isn't too bad, because most of the kids are free or get a reduced fare, but getting there is ugly for the pocketbook! Just think about buying your airfare, then multiply it by six! Ugh! We keep getting requests to go to the states for family reunions, parties and whatnot. "Oh, well, you guys go on trips all the time, why not come see US?" Yeah, well, compare train fare to Cologne vs. round trip tix to Chicago!

I went with food. It may not be the most expensive thing, but it is the thing that you constintly do not plan to spend money on. Oh ya, i need a water for like night train, and probably some fruit or a granola bar. At least for me, i eat a lot though.

Sad fact is that on my last trek, I spent a grand total of less than $100 on hostels, and the rest was socializing/food/partying. But FWIW, those are often lumped together. I saved a lot by offering my culinary skills in trade for others buying the food

Good resurrected topic!

It's soializing for me too, I spent the guts of a grand over the last week and a half during our town festival. On what, I haven't a clue but I'm guessing it was on booze amoungst other things.

I would think the airfare is the most expensive. If you are a culinary snob then you may be paying top dollar for food in places that do not have a reputation for good food. Nice thing about countries like Italy or France is you can find a hole in the wall in the non touristy places, get a great meal, and not pay much for it. Best of luck to your budget!

for me it's lodging. Lodging is a thorn in my side the last few weeks. So many places to go and no money for a room. It's a pain in the arse.

After airfare, I would def. have to say accommodation is the most expensive. So make good friends from all over while you're 'packing, and then later on you can go stay with them. And they can come stay with you. I like traveling that way...
