Sounds kinda sweet:
A year away, doing something you can be proud of.
$6000 when you get back. NOt bad if you don't have any expenses when you leave.
15% student loan forgiviness.
A heck of a resume builder.
Probably more life experience in one year then many get in a lifetime.
Any1 else every ponder this idea?

Yes, I have looked into it and still hope to maybe do it someday. First you should know that it is 27 months, not 1 year....the main reason I have yet to do it. If I remember correctly, it's 3 months training and then 24 months of volunteering.
Anyway, verstehen is the resident Peace Corp expert. He's currently volunteering in Morocco and not able to sign on too often but he could obviously help you out more.

The Peace Corps also has a 5 million page application. The training includes laguage, culture, and other important stuff about your potential place of volunteer. I think it is held in DC? (not sure). I may still do it one day as well. I would prefer Thailand or Mexico personally. And the 6 grand doesn't hurt either. I am also curious about the foreign legion. Anybody?

I was looking at jamaca or belize, or maybe like fiji or tonga...but i also found some year round camp/teacher for at-risk youth jobs....i need something non-office oriented

Just so you know, you don't get to pick where you go with the peace corps...you tell them preferences as reagrds type of work and such and then they place you...
I have worked along side peace corps folk a lot, and depending one where you are placed and what you are doing it can either really suck or be really great. They have a 45% drop out rate in redeveloping countries. Mostly because the organisation sort of leaves you on your own, with only mild support and such.
Don't get me wrong, I am not downing the peace corps folks, some of them are doing great work...on the other hand some of them just use it for a free ride (and thus get the nick name "beach corps"). My suggestion is shop around. If you can find a private org to work with you will have a lot more defined support system and know better what and where and such when you begin.
Thats my two cents...

I looked into the peace corps. I have the application all but finished cause I don't want them calling me yet. It's something that takes some strong consideration to do. But I would love to do some sort of humanitarian work at some point. Although I was looking at places like Central Asia and Eastern Europe. Sounds like some excitement over there.

i would love to do something like that, but peace corps is sounding less and less attractive. i think KKL has some strong points about private orgs. i will have to do a lot more research. if the peace corps was only a year, then id go for it, but 27 months is a long time.

i filled that app out two years ago. Along with the Americorps app.
after i got the info sayin they wanted me I changed my mind. Didnt sound like as much fun as i originally thought.
