have at least 50 pounds on you when u arrive, just incase your plane arrives at some godawful hour and everything is shut, then at least u can catch the train/bus into town and get to your hotel.
Im not sure of where u get the best exchange rate though.

You'll get the best exchange rate using your ATM card once you get to London. Generally, your bank will charge you the wholesale exchange rate + the transaction fee they normally charge for using out-of-network ATMs. These rates will undoubtedly be better than anything you can get by walking into a bank or using a Bureau de Change booth. Also, most (all?) British ATMs won't charge you a fee to use them, so you just get dinged a buck or two by your bank at home.

Just be sure to notify your bank before you go the dates of your travel, where you're going, etc. so they don't shut it off on you.

and hey-- bonus points if you use a credit union instead of a bank. My credit union only charges me 30 cents per ATM transaction NOT at their branch, and the exchange rate they gave me was way better than US Bank (fuck you, US Bank!!)

yeah....credit union is fairly good, esp for overseas stuff......my bank that im in right now is AWESOME normally( EVERYTHING is free...no monthly fees, no charges on ANYTHING, & a kickass savings plan (i just made $8.50 in interest on just under 5k last month))....but I just found out it kind of sucks internationally(well....I suppose it's decent).....they charge 3% of whatever I take out...humm.....
