So, what does anyone think is the best city/place in Europe, taking into account how much fun one can have for a minimal amount of money? It also helps if said location is warm...

never been but i hear Prague is very very cheap, great beer, great night life, etc.
anywhere in eastern europe. spain is also kinda cheap compared to the rest of western europe

skidrage 07-13-2004 08:29 PM

Kind of following with what Matador said, Spain is a lot of fun and is the cheapest Western Europe country I have been to. Going out at night will still cost some money. I remember beer being about two euro's and mixed drinks ranging from three euros to five euros, which is very good when a lot of countries charge around eight euros for mixed drinks.

For Eastern Europe, Prague is pretty cheap, but you can party in most cities out there for very little. For Prague, beer will cost you under one euro and mixed drinks average about two euro, while there is plenty of night life to choose from. Krakow was cheaper, but I thought Prague had more to offer.

Forgot to add cities for Spain. Madrid and Barcelona have incredible night life with people partying until 8:00 am in the clubs. Another city to check out is San Sebastian. They have something like the most bars per people or per meter, something like that. Anyway, on some streets in that city, it is one bar right after another on a street.

portugal. portugal is wonderful, nice people, great weather, and considerably cheaper than spain.

jorgino 10-14-2004 09:03 AM

Which places in Portugal? I'm planning to visit and it would be great to know, thanks

urOZm8 10-16-2004 10:58 AM

Jorgino dont miss Sintra just a short train ride from Lisboa. Make sure to go to the moorish castle where you will get one of the best views ever. Look Sintra up!
Coimbra was a nice town with a 16th century university.

I'll definitely check Sintra out, I never heard of this place before but it will be exciting to learn! Thanks a bunch for the advice!!

greek islands were actually very cheap when I was there this year late may/early June. I found hostels for 5 and 8 euros a night, gyros for 1.50 euros. You could do it very cheap.

skorch 11-29-2004 01:52 PM

Prague can be more expensive than you think. If you're anywhere near the sites that are worth seeing (its cheap in the shitty ghetto areas), expect to pay up to 2euro for a beer. That doesn't mean the rest of the Czech Republic is expensive! Oh goodness no. In Kutna Hora, me and two fellow travelers had two beers each and it came to under 2euro. In Cesky Krumlov, a night at the hostel was 10euro, a massive bacon&egg breakfast was 2euro and beer was 0.40 euro (its even cheaper if you go to the Eggenburg brewery).

So other than Czech Republic (Prague) is there other Eastern European countries that are cheap but definately worth a visit?

skorch 11-29-2004 04:23 PM

Sicily was relatively cheap. The hostel in Catania was $15euro/night and there was a huge market right outside of the hostel where we stocked up on fresh food and wine for the day. I'd say I was living off of $30euro a day for everything including wine.

Sicily is definately worth seeing if you're in the area. It takes a bit of time by train to get there though. You have to go all the way to the end of the boot in order to cross.

Somnambulation 11-29-2004 11:36 PM

I am slightly pissed at myself for not making it to Sicily on my last trip. I really wanted to make a pilgramge to Corleone.

sapin and portugal
slamnaca has awesome nightlife and if you go to the right places it can very cheap. stay at the hostal barcelona, its good and cheap if you slpit the cost
also llanes in asturias is increible with good nightlife awesome beaches and good camping for cheap. the campsite is just north of town on the other side of the harbor. enjoy the the sidra, i miss it dearly
in portugal we went to lagos which is a bit touristy but awesome beaches and cheap beer and food and good nightlife. san sebastian is grand too, i think it is cheaper to stay in pensiones if you split the cost with two frineds or something. in lagos we had a third story room with a tv, air, blacony overlooking town super nice for only 20 euro each. breakfast too.
sleep on beches if you want to save money, the sunrise are usually pricless and the san ins comfortable.
obrigado para todo

Just registered today to help someone out hopefully but decided what the hell, I might as well share what ive experienced in eastern europe. My spelling isnt the greatest but gets the point across. Been to lithaunia 3 months over a 3 year period, Prague about 2 months in the last 3 years and crete about 12 months in the last 5 years. Spent time in romaina, ukraine, amsterdam, ireland, estonia, germany etc but really not more than a month in each place. I hope this helps a little. Im not big into sightseeing although I would be a fool not to see the sights, but im always looking for the best nightlife.

LITHAUNIA
For eastern europe I would have to say Lithuania is the place to be. Prices were around 3 lita to the dollar. Average price at their local pizza chain was 9 lita for a meal. At a nice Indian restraunt with a bottle or 2 of wine and a meal for 2 people costs about 50 lita.
You have plenty to see nearby, castles, churches, the TV tower and the one thing must see place is the KGB house. It was the one of the old KGB HQ's in vilinuis and the things russians did to the lithuanian people are quite unspeakable. The ratio of guys to girls was 1:4 at least...sometimes places like malibu got to be like 1:8+.

And the nightlife rivals the best of europe. Clubs not to be missed are lithuania wild and malibu. Downstairs of malibu is a stripclub that is not recommended...went there once and welllll if your into girls right of of high school just learning how to dance then maybe you will like it.

PRAGUE
I wasnt impressed with the nightlife in prague unless you went far away from prague itself. The 4 story disco next to the St. Charles bridge is highly overrated. Would say the ratio of guys to girls was 6:1 at least.

The one thing prague has going for it are the sights. St. Charles bridge at night is picture perfect postcard material, the palace and bone church outside of prague are also sights not to be missed. Prices are decent and you can get absinthe with wormwood from the supermarket next to the apple hostel. Probably about a 10 min walk from the St. Charles bridge. A Lot to see here but a tame nightlife compared to the balitc states or the islands of greece.

CRETE
If all you want is a non-stop party with liver destroying prices hersonisis and malia are the places to be. Last couple years ive gone multiple times during the summer. Prices for drinks vary from club to club....At the very least its 2 drinks for 5 euro, but not uncommon to find 4 for 1 at 5 euro a pop. If you live in the states you might say well, those prices arent the greatest but when you see the absurd amount of achohol in each thats when you realize your in heaven. Prices for hotels over looking the water are 15 euro a night a person but you can rent apartments a little bit away from the strip for much cheaper. The beaches right by hersonsis and malia imo cant compare to others in crete really. A good website to check out is www.malia.co.uk

Malia is a younger crowd, probably up to around 24, while hersonsis a 15 min ride away is a older crowd around 28 ish on average. Both places that should never be missed when visiting crete.

SICILY

Well, winter in catania, palermo the nightlife is there but unless youve travelled around I would make this the last stop since you can skip it and not miss anything. Summer is nice but spain and greece blow it away. Italians arent big into clubs or pubs and not even close to being drinkers. Places do stay open until 5am which is a plus.

friar 02-28-2005 11:39 PM

Budapest is by far the best place I have been to in europe. Its dirt cheap for food and beer, like $2 for a meal and 25-50 cents for beer. The girls are by far the hottest I have ever seen in my life, and the place goes off until like 6am every day of the week.

If you want to go to a really nice restaurant with all you can eat and drink it will cost maybe $8-$10.

The chicks there are seriously INSANE, I damn near lost my mind. Go in the summer while its nice and toasty and you'll see. I almost didnt come home.

mowark 03-28-2005 08:51 PM

I havn't been for a few years, but last time i was there Slovakia Slovenia and poland are all cheap (pretty much in order of cheapest to least cheapest) and also amazing. real nice people and beautiful scenery

Rimbaud 04-13-2005 09:48 AM

I`d agree Prague is`nt as cheap as it was - i was there 6 years ago and it was dirt cheap, i`ve been there nearly every year since and now its as expensive as spending a night out in any western Euro city.
Check out Brno!Its still cheapish.

If your looking for great, cheap places not to be misssed i`d say:
Central Slovakia(like going back in time)
Slovenia/Lake Bled
Bosnia/Serbia
Some parts of Poland - Zakopane in the tatra mountians is great value.

Esterina 04-13-2005 09:58 AM

The best country for solo traveller interested in meeting locals to get as close to the culture as possible is Romania. And still one of the cheapest of Europe. My best memories are there, this is where I learned to open my heart to pure strangers.

But nightlife isn't great at all. To my sense, Budapest is, or maybe Krakow. :wine:
