I'm having a hard time creating a budget for my upcoming trip to the UK. It's a unique situation, so I'll do my best to explain it. I'm going to Cambridge, England, to be a student at Corpus Christi College for 6 weeks. The lodging during the week and breakfast and lunch during the week are paid for, but dinner every night isn't, so we have to pay for that out of our own pockets. Also, I'm planning on hitting the pubs as much as I can not necessarily every night, but I'd say 4-5 nights a week. On the weekends, we are free to travel, (and this is something I'll create another post discussing) so we have to pay for everything then. I've gotten a BritRail youth flexipass, so transportation is taken care of, but everything else isn't...lodging, food, clubs/pubs, museums, etc.

In addition, on the 4th week of hte program, from July 16th-26th, we've got that entire week to travel wherever we want. So, if i'm going to be trying to be thrifty about food (going to supermarkets instead of restaurants a lot) and I want to be able to hit up the pubs when I feel like it, and I have to worry about dinner every night, and all my expenses on weekends/the long week, and there's going to be 5 weekends as well as the week we have free, would $2000 American cover what I want, with enough aside for luxuries on occasion if i feel like it? I'm doing my best to plan this out becuase this is my first trip overseas...and i'm pretty nervous. Thanks for any help you can offer...

Well, put it this way. Your $2000 equals about 1000 GBP, and the price figures on most things in the UK is about the same as here (I said ROUGHLY, not exactly.) So basically, plan on spending twice as much as you would doing the same thing here (or another way to look at it is that your money goes half as far.) Does that make sense? I think that $2000 should be the mininum that you take, but you may be okay with just that much. Good luck and have a great time!
