Default ATM vs. currency exchange

I don't know how it works country to country, but I'm trying too figure out if I should just take out some money before I leave and forgetting any ATM charges once I get in Colombia, and exchanging my money at the currency exchanges. However I believe I read when I was researching for my Europe trip last summer that you get a better exchange rate if you use the ATM, so I'm not sure which I should do, or if it's one way in Europe and another way in South America.

Your trip is only a week or two right? You might be able to get away with just brining enough cash to not have to worry about ATMs. Exchage it on the street and you're good to go...
