*insert profanities here*
i hate the AUD so much more now.
dropping 7 cents (against USD) overnight is one thing...
(but the thing that gets me the most is....)
today i went in to buy my JR pass just in case the price went up. the chick at flight centre couldn't get through to Jalpak so she said she'd get back to me tomorrow on it.
when i was in there at 4pm, the site said $502 for 14 day ordinary pass.
tonight, less than 3 hours later, i check the site and it says $645 "revised 08 oct 2008"
next cheapest is railtickets.com.au at $564 + $12 insurance fee. my first quote was $451 back in july... (couldn't buy it then as it was greater than 3 months from my departure date)
*pulls hair out*

Yeah the AUD sucks at the moment. We were all so proud of it when it was almost =USD.
At least it's still colourful and waterproof.

Sweet, you should give Melbourne life a shot then.

When is your trip Catt? I'm wondering now if it wouldn't be smart to hold off as long as you can to see if it rebounds.

I dont wanna hijack this thread but I also didnt want to start an entirely new one to talk currency issues so I'll just get this outta the way.
Iceland's Krona has dropped 50% over the past year. If you ever wanted to go, do it now. Those $10 beers I was buying last fall are now $4.80. That is all.
Speaking of Australia, I really wanna go there as soon as I have the time to do it right.

Yeah I heard Iceland was having some economic issues. Would love to go sometime, seems like the perfect place to start a Eurotrip.

Now is the time to do it. The Australian Dollar just hit a 5 year low. 67.65 USD.

Oh I'm not worried about the money issue...Aren't all you Aussies on here going to be putting me up on your couches and buying that first round for me?
Seriously though its time. When I go I want it to be for at least a month. Which I know still isn't a lot but might be all I can do.

maracle, my trips are like this...
japan is end of november for 2 weeks
hawaii is mid february for 2 weeks
(possible usa trip in march or april for 2 - 3 weeks)
then round the world (including Iceland!!! so that piece of information was very relevant to me!) may june july...
all flights have been paid for... cant really afford to lose out on all the money i've put on it all... on the plus side, i begged my travel agent to get me the cheaper JR passes and due to the fact we couldn't get through to Jalpak that day, they decided to honour the cheaper price for me!!
mbo - stop talking about wanting to come to Australia and just do it. we're pretty freaking awesome and we make fun of new zealanders...

its busy... and now becoming more and more expensive (i'm planning on quitting my job in 7 weeks from today!)
but the japan fare cost me $450 rtn and hawaii $750 rtn... how could i NOT do this?
as for the maybe usa trip... its looking like a maybe not trip... it is based on whether the get up kids do the rumoured reunion tour or not... i am sort of hoping not so i can save my monies...

i just reworked my budgets today for japan and china.
when i first worked them out in june/july it was dollar/yen and .98 for the usd, now its screwed so bad.
ive had to cut out Tibet and yangze cruise in order to keep my china budget the same- i cant afford to add more money into that leg. and with japan....omg. its gone from $4k to $6k. i really cant cut it back anymore either... thank god i got my JR pass back in sep prices of .88
i wanna pull my hair out and drink copious amounts of tequila to make myself feel better.
oh, and to top it off i got fired. 7 weeks out from leaving. wicked.

You know what sucks?
My company is doing all these redundancies and/or relocations across Australia and NZ and my friend was affected by it - her whole branch was closed down (kind of like in the Office... and ended up moving elsewhere...
Here I am wanting to be made redundant and it makes me feel bad cos everyone else is losing their job...
But today I've decided I'm gonna need to know I have a job so I'm gonna get the balls to ask my boss for leave and just hold out til Feb... I think I can sell my soul for another few months... right?

do you get paid out to be redundant?
im seriously considering taking my JR passes back in for a refund- ill only lose 10% so ill get back about $1800 on the four passes, ill save $6k by skipping japan altogether, and instead spend those three weeks bumming it in vietnam or something, then head up to china and carry on as usual.
the whole dollar thing is fucking depressing.
and no one wants strippers when they have their retirement funds to worry about!!! BOOO

I'm a bit surprised, I would think people could use some cheering up after they see how much they've lost....
