Default standby travel?

is it cheaper?

has anyone just packed their bags and gone to the airport to travel without knowing where they are going, and just taking the first available flight on standby?

id love to do this, as i usually have a short notice on how long i can travel for ,but for some reason booking flights online or at an agent always cost a fortune no short notice.

It's not cheaper. The only affordable way to fly standby is by either being an airline employee or getting buddy passes from an airline employee. Flying standby can be amazing and sometimes it can be downright painful.

I've flown stand-by a few times but it was on an employee's buddy pass. Considerably cheaper using a buddy pass but like Jake said just going to the airport and trying to do it standby is usually the same. Maybe even more for a last minute purchase depending on the situation.

Yeah...I think the whole "public" stand by travel is a thing of the past. You have to work in the industry to qualify, nowadays...

I remember back in the 80s anyone could do it, but I don't see that kind of thing around anymore. The internet has pretty much replaced it with its last minute fares and packages.

Thumbs down standby

Standby sucks! I was booked from Guam to Lax recently and had a stop in Honolulu, but the weather was so nice i just hopped on a bus and headed to Waikiki where i found a phonebook and ended up spending a week at this awesome little hostel. When I finally went back to the airport, I had to arrive 5 hours early for standby for some reason, then I got literally the last seat on the plane and security had to STRIP SEARCH ME before I boarded because I was a "last minute boarder". *shudders* I hate airport security
