How much per day????
 

What do you recommend for daily spending to take on a 2 month trek through europe? I have thought about $70 per day but wondeirng if I could get away with $50 and still have money to drink and check out attractions.

need a little more info than that dude, which parts of europe do you plan to hit up? (Eastern is a lot cheaper than western) and 50$/day is what currency exactly?

My fault.... it is USD and I will be going all over... Western Europe from Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany to Italy, France, and Spain and in Eastern I will be hitting up Budapest, Czech Republic, and Slovakia.

does that include travel money? If it does, I think at $50/day you'll be cutting it really tight (as in hitchhiking & camping anyone?)...especially in Western Europe & with a lot of travel....I mean it IS possible to get like a loaf of bread, some water & meat for the day at a grocery store for 5-10 Euros, then stays at hostels will be around 15 (CHEAP, and rare)- 25 (average) euros/night plus whatever sight seeing entrance fees you might incur.

That's western europe though, I'm not as familiar with eastern....

It really depends on how much you want to budget. When I first started I bought food at grocery stores and barely spent anything. By the end I stopped caring and could easily spend 70 EUR on a [long] night of drinking. You just have to decide what you're willing or able to spend, and stick to it.

I usually budgeted about $30/night on hostels which seemed to work well. I think i also saved a bunch by lugging my nalgene bottle everywhere and always filling it from public water fountains instead of paying for bottle water everywhere.

Also just because you have a rail pass does not mean you don´t have to pay for trains. Especially on sleepers or high speed trains where reservations are required. The highest reservation I had to pay was 25 Euro on a sleeper from Amsterdam to Zurich.

I have been trying to stay around 50 euro per day and that works good, but not a ton of partying.

I think it's a realistic global average amount : $70 in Western Europe and $25-40 in Eastern Europe. :)

Belgium is expensive but the rest are quite moderate, Spain is fairly cheap and and of course eastern Europe is far cheaper than the west. Atchoum's estimate seems great.

If anything, I would overbudget, esp. for your first few days. If a few days go by and you realize that you're way way over budgeting, then maybe adjust. But by overbudgeting, at least you have that cushion, you know?

But that's just me. :p

When I am researching hostels or what not, I am always looking for atleast a free breakfast. I am impressed with the number of hostels in western and eastern europe that also give a lunch bag, plus free dinner if you don't mind cooking it (usually pasta and sauce). This is a BIGGGGG plus for me when researching accomodation options. If I can get a free breakfast and have the option to take bread, cheese, meats with me for lunch, theres a travel budget saver!!!! And NEVER forget the grocery store option. Not only for food, but beers as well:cheers:

I agree with atchoum ($70 in Western Europe and $25-40 in Eastern Europe). Of course you can get away with less or more just depending on your groove. It was stupid, but i spent a lot in the Netherlands and Germany which were at the start of my trip. As i settled in, i did spend much less. By Spain i was usually eating a free breakfast, getting a snack for lunch, and then making my own dinner. Don't hesitate to eat your fill at breakfast, you will need the energy. I also found a lot of cool people to cook dinner with and that is a very good part of the experience i think.

Watch your funds at first and you will slide into a routine. Like everyone said... overbudget, it can't hurt! You never want to get back to the states and say wow i wish i would have had enough money to do this or that while i was in Europe.

is this still an accurate figure. I know this is only two months later but the dollar is falling? should i budget more a day or what?

i just checked xe.com. its about 1.45 USD per euro, versus May when I was there the figure was about 1.3 O.O daaaaaang lol

Another way of doing the same thing is just to type into google 1 EUR in USD

It will give you the current exchange rate :)
