If you're traveling with another person, you can cut your costs down by splitting hostels, food, car, etc...At least $40 a day at the minimum. But at that rate per day, you're eating bocadillos(baguette sandwiches) most of the time and drinking water. Western Europe is more expensive than Eastern Europe by a long shot so the above rate really only applieas to the Western countries. For $40 a day in Eastern (Czech, Slovakia, Romania, etc...) you'll live like a king or queen!
Traveling by yourself and you should add another $10-$20 a day to the above estimate, just to be safe.
If you like to hit the clubs and drink a lot, that could absorb a significant amount of dough when it is all said and done

Hey, I agree with that totally. On my Travelpunk.com/budget page, I say $75 a day no matter what. This way you are safe and you will probably come home with money. That's a good feeling
I just got back from Spain, after a year, and it's more expensive there now, than it was two years ago. Mostly because of the adoption of the Euro a year and a half ago. Businesses have jacked up the prices of everything.
Candy bars that were 40 cents are now 75 cents- thats almost a 100 % increase!
Even so, $75 a day will have you covered, and then some. Better safe than sorry! B)

If you want to do a cheap trip, definitely stick to the public transportation system over there - that will save you a lot of money per day. When I spent some time in Germany last year, I think I averaged about 30/day (I had a German rail pass, and divvied up among the time I spent there, it was cheap and I got my money's worth). And you can definitely go cheaper, depending on how much you want to 'rough' it. To be safe, I would budget like 50 to 60 a day; this way, you might have some left over, which is always a good feeling (like finding a 20 in the pants you wore last winter but forgot to check the pockets and viola! you're rich :P ) SO there ya go. My two cents!

I agree Sherp! In Madrid, when I first got there last year, I was taking cabs all aound the city-$2-$4 here and there, this adds up especially in cities like Madrid where there is a lot happening. Then, I wised up and decided to do more undergound metro action for .50 each ride and it saved me the bucks! I did a lot more walking because of this and the best part about it all, after a year in Madrid, I headed back to LA just 2 weeks ago and the first thing my sister said as she picked me up at the airport was, "you got thinner!"
Take the public transpo, you'll benefit in more ways than just saving money !

I traveled through western Europe for 1 1/2 months before the euro came out and it was about $80-$100 (CDN) day, more if i shopped at all. There were some nights where i just wanted my own shower or a bath and i spluged on a hotel room. So depending on your adventures and your self control it will vary. But ATLEAST $80 a day (CDN)
