atrac3 is a typr of music format,its stands for Adaptive Transform Acoustic Coding 3...simple way to do this some decent information about ATRAC3,ya kno there are so many different type of formats sound files can come in,my favourite is monkey audio i think it is...just the name,its gets me,think the abbreviation fer it is APE...you cant tell me that is not cool...maybe my head is a bit screwed ,yea most common types are wma,wav,mp3,aac,omg (i think)flac...these maybe jsut ones i kno,aac is an apple special format and omg is sony special format,just like atrac is sony's also

Having worked for Sony, I know, they come out with some great technologies, but keeping them more or less proprietary, they're pointless for mass market use. If you're looking to buy a player, just make sure it supports MP3 and you're fine.
Yes, there are tons of better digital audio formats out there, but the majority of stuff is in MP3, as well as Windows-only WMA files and iTunes-only AAC (.M4A/.M4P) files. That's generally the deciding factor there. Do you buy music from Napster or Rhapsody? Or from iTunes? Neither?
