I'm going to Europe for the first time this summer for about a month and I was wondering what I should do about storing pictures. I have a 6 megapixel camera and normally shoot at the highest resolution. How many pictures do you think I'll take in a month?

Should I:
A) Buy a bunch of memory cards? And if so, how many?

B) Buy and iPod and get the camera connector?

C) Use one medium size card and upload all my pictures in an internet cafe to flickr.com? How prevalent are internet cafes in Europe?

Thanks

You could get the size of one picture and multiply it by about five of six hundred. I took nearly fivehundred pics but I didn't realy take loads and you might take a few more.

I only used one big 500mb card which ment if I lost my cammera I lost all my pics, luckily I didn't but if you can spread the pictures over two or three cards it would probably be safer.

I took 1300 photos during my one month trip. I used a 5 megalpixel cam at superfine resolution...so approx 1meg per photo. I had 2 512 meg cards and 2 256 meg cards with me.

there are lots of internet cafe's although I didn't come across one that would let you use their drives.

How many photos you take depends on what kind of person you are...if you're really trigger happy like me bring an extra card...or you could always buy one when you get there.

I definitely say option A and possibly C if you can. As dfresh stated, it depends on the person, but I take hundreds of pictures when I'm out. We had two cameras with us and when we were sans my laptop, ended up buying another memory card because we filled up both cards. Also, as MeTurk brought up, it might be good to separate the pictures in case something happens to a card.

I'd buy the card in the states there allot cheeper over there.

I bought 2 2GB memory cards from ebay for $200 alot cheaper then here in canada they came from china i think...they hold between 3000-4000 pictures at 1meg per photo so pretty good

I meant if they got stuck.

I take several memory sticks with me (1GB, 512mb, 128mbX2), but I unload them at an internet cafe every chance I get - either by my own cable or having them burn the data on to a CD.

It's good to have multiple cards, simply because sometimes you can't get to an internet cafe. Especially if you go somewhere isolated for a day or two and end up taking hundreds of photos. Having tons of memory is never a bad thing. It allows you to shoot all the pictures you want, and you can take care of weeding out the bad ones later on down the road.

Of course, this is why it takes me forever to get my travel photos up. I probably have a 5:1 ratio on photos I'd be happy to show the public.

I always have a few memory cards on me as well, like most of the people have stated here. But it is nice to upload them every now and then just to have an actual hard copy of them. Uploading them onto a site like Flickr is also a good idea.

As for what sizes I currently bring with me, I have a 256, 512 and a 1G. But I am also spoiled and have my laptop and can upload and burn cds at any time. Which you wont have that luxury in Europe. But there are internet cafes that you can do that stuff!

What if you're travelling to remote areas?? Like small villages and town in Burma, Thailand, cambodia... Would u still be able to find internet cafes in major cities to upload your pix or is it worthwhile to carry a laptop with you everywhere?

tumblezweedz 03-14-2006 12:23 PM

...but would you really want to be lugging a laptop around Burma? Surely it'd be easier to take a couple extra memory cards...

twisted_tbar 03-14-2006 05:17 PM

I guess so. But that's gonna be a lot of memory sticks if I decide to stick to my original plan: be gone for more than 6 months...would it be worth it -money and weight wise- to carry around a laptop for that long???

omisan 03-15-2006 12:50 AM

If I were traveling for that long, I'd probably take my laptop, but then, it contains my freakin life. ;)

benna2 03-15-2006 07:10 AM

Oh please dont confuse what I said about my laptop to actually suggesting you bring it with you! The good thing about my laptop is that I get to keep it in my apartment every night. I would not want to lug it around with me all the time!! Just bring some extra memory cards!

The Monsignor 03-16-2006 02:21 AM

Yeah, a laptop is really an awful lot to be lugging around on a backpacking type trip.... extra memory is probably better...

my camera takes compact flash cards, so I can get 6gb 'microdrives' at a reasonable price, and they really do hold a ton of stuff.... (I currently have a 2gb one, and it lasts me a long time, even with lots of photos on an 8mp camera)

since you can delete the crappy photos on the fly, there's probably more than enough space with a couple 1 or 2 gig chips to carry you ...
