I know it's been asked a 1000 times... but I'de thought I'de ask again in case opinions changed or something like that... but what camera do you carry? what's best for backpacking? Specifically what should I get? I'm looking for something in the 200-300 dollar range.. I like really shar/clear images.. well I guess everyone does.. but I don't need a ton of professional type stuff... just a good strong basic camera.. a few features would be nice.. but ya kow.. *ramble*

Jake recommened this camera

I swear by olympus. I have had 3 cameras from them and they all were great. I also must have one that takes AA batteries. I don't need a charger and hard to find batteries to ruin my trip.

I've wound up going Olympus, cause they tend to have the best zooms lately (that always changes)

I carry two different ones (actually 3, but my kids stole the one that fits inside an Altoids box)

I have a larger C-8080 wide zoom - cheaper than the SLR varieties, awsome optics, and 8MP - great cause you can snap now, and crop later. It's a bit bulky and slow for some things, but it does good landscape shots and does video with sound at 640x480 - something i've found handy.

I have a smaller Olympus (I forget the model) that I carry for point and shoot stuff, it's water resistant, compact (I've found that to be important - I hate blowing a Kodak moment for lack of a camera) and takes pretty decent 5mp photos.

For really in-depth reviews of cameras, I've liked Digital Photography Review He doesn't review every model, but there's a pretty decent selection and his site can give you some really good info about image quality/speed/battery life etc for your camera.

As to which camera you get - think hard on what features you really use and in what order of importance to you. What works for me may not be at all suitable for your needs.

I'm a pretty big technogeek, so having complex features and buttons and nested menus on a camera doesn't scare me. For others, like my kids, they like my Casio Exilim cause it's only got 3 buttons on it, and the menus are super easy.

When you ask for advice on a camera, if you talk about when and where you take pictures, what you take pictures of, how technically competent are you (are you able to program your vcr unassisted, or does a microwave oven stump you?) What level of photographer do you consider yourself and what's the target for the photos (screen saver on your computer, snapshots, stuff to go on your wall, stuff to go on someone else's wall, etc)

If you can give us more info, you're more likely to get the right camera for you rather than the right camera for me...

I think size is a very important thing to take into consideration when backpacking. If you want to get a lot of party shots (which, in my opinion are the best travelling photos) then you will want something nice and small that you can carry in your pocket to take out to the pubs and clubs. Also, if you are going to some not so friendly countries then you may, again, want something that is easily concealable so as not to advertise the fact that you have something nice and expensive to steal.

Battery type is another important thing to consider for backpacking because sometimes you just don't get the chance to recharge so being able to simply buy some replacement AAs from the shop can come in very handy.

Then, there's always the usual features to consider, such as MP and zoom.

Which one satisfies all these.....buggered if i know. The Sony CyberShot DSC-T7 looks like a pretty cool travelling camera, dunno how strong it would be though.

I know there were more than a few problems with the T-1 when it came out because for some reason the W-1 was preferred. But they might have fixed those buggery lil problems with the T-7. And if that's the case then I don't know how it couldn't be the PERFECT traveling camera!

The Canon IXUS 750.... but wait till next year, it's going wireless live download and no cables. 7.1 megapixel... only downside is the SD card included is a bit sad at 32MB... needs a 1 or 2 GB card really.

I have the A85 (predecessor to your camera) and I'm looking at upgrading to the A620. If I can. HELL YEAH.

I have the Canon SD300 and it's been absolutely amazing. very very durable and takes great quality pictures. its very small so it will fit comfortable in a pants pocket while going unnoticable. I have used it for just about everything from taking pictures at a formal event to snowmobiling in the -20F weather of northern Maine. Never had a problem with it. its basic enough where anybody can use it easily, while there are still features that you will never even use. produces great quality images and is just an all around reliable camera...also, there is a built in wrist strap that is adjustable, which i have found is a life saver a few times. Great travel Camera!

Good price too, i'd say you could get one for $240 online somewhere. i paid under $300 for mine i believe at Best Buy a year ago. Let me know what you decide.
