Hi, everyone.
Getting ready for my first backpacking trip, going through central and eastern europe (with some jaunts over to western europe). I'm going to be doing some consulting work while I'm over there, so I'll be hauling my ultralight laptop with me. I'm going to be hostelling, etc., so I'm worried about safety. How do people normally secure valuables like the laptop? I'll have it inside a daybag inside my larger pack, but I'm sure it would still be an easy target. Would it be safe to lock it up inside lockers, should I lock it up when I sleep, etc.? Thanks for all your great advice in the other posts - I've been scouring through them to get as much knowledge as I can before heading over! And thanks in advance for your help on this one, Aaron |
Some hostels have a safe, where you could store your laptop, but this is the other option. Keep it in the daybag and then inside another bag like you stated, and then just buy some luggage locks, combination ones are usually the best. Then you could buy a cable lock to attach the bag to you bed. This should insure the safety of your computer.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Aaron,
I unfortunately am a teckie as well and am unable to pry my self away from my laptop. What I did was buy a Jan sport day pack that has a hidden compartment in the main pouch for the laptop. I know they still sell it. I will try to find the link and post it for you. As far as security goes while you sleep, I bought a bike cable lock and lock my bag to the bed frame as I slept and a little key lock to lock the zipper shut. I spent a month in hostel sleeping in a room with 20 other people and was fine. My bag was tampered with countless times but no one got to anything inside. Basically treat it like your passport never let it out of your site and it will be fine. Mikie :taz: |
