I'm currently a sophmore in highschool and I'm looking through student travel programs for this summer. Does anybody have any suggestions or first hand experience they might like to lend?

First off, welcome to Tpunk!

AFS (American Field Service) does year/semester exchanges and summer programs

People to People: Student Ambassadors

Rotary Exchanges

I was thinking of going abroad with a student tour group so I did some research on it but I ultimately decided it would be better for me to go independent so I haven't actually went with any of these groups. We do have someone with AFS on an exchange right now on the boards who may be able to give you some more info on AFS.

Also, to connect with other exchange students you can try this site. Its the unofficial Rotary Exchange message boards but they have people from AFS and other places who can give more info.

Good luck on your quest to go abroad this summer.

My first travel experience was with People to People...it was great but I really wish I hadn't forked over all the money it cost. I realize now I could of done so much more with that money...like a 3-month trip solo to Europe instead of 28-days in 3-4 star hotels.

But what specifically are you looking for? A homestay, just travel or something volunteer-wise?

Thats my PoV about it too and why I decided against it. PtP is a for-profit organization and they (from what I've read) don't really live up to their mission statement. That is to connect with peoples of other nations and be an "ambassador." I read that pretty much they take your on a tourist's tour of Europe, the "front door," if you will (borrowed from Rick Steves :P) and you never meet any real locals.

i'm the one abroad with AFS right now. Best program to go with in my own opion. Very very well organized with everything. A non-profit organization, they do summer, year, semester, community servious programs. They have a big list of countries you can go to and everything. Just drop me an e-mail if you have an more questions about it.
