So recently my cousin got her dual citizenship & is now in Northern England working in a hotel. It sounds like she has it pretty sweet there, cheap rent, cheap food, cheap booze, lots of parties.

I wanna go!

I was talking with her mom (my aunt) the other day & it sounds like I would pretty much be guaranteed a job there if I got my working holidaymaker visa. (I can't get the dual visa, long story)

So it sounds pretty simple, but I'm kinda torn between quitting my current place of empolyment to take off for a couple years. I'm moving into a fairly comfortable position in the next year & it won't be there when I choose to come back home. So my only option would be to go back to school when I'm done travelling...which isn't really a bad thing. I've been meaning to go back.

So lets hear some o-pinions!!!

Should I stay or should I go?

GO!! you've seen vancouver. vancouver will always be here and you can always go back to it. go have some adventure while you can. you'll get to go explore a whole other continent and you've already got a job lined up (something the majority of people on this site would kill for).

Hell yes you should go! Hehehe, as if anyone here on TRAVELpunk would say 'well, man I dunno, really you should err on the side of safety and not leave your backyard. The world's just too big...'! Take a plunge off the deep end!

I pretty much knew how everyone here would vote, thanks everyone. I think I just needed to voice my own fear about;

Quote:
quitting my current place of empolyment
Giving up something I've worked hard at for the last few years is kind of intimidating to me...

Travelling for me has always been about getting out of my comfort zone & learning new things. This would take the whole thing to a new level...

11.11% of us are currently all about canada. I dont know why but reading your post pulled me towards you staying.

Here's why,
I like to complete a task before I leave somewhere ya know? Like a goal and it sounds to me like you set a goal to get this position that you are about to get.

Now here is what I would do (and have done in the past)
Wait for the promotion.
Have fun with it for a couple months (like totally abuse it to an extent)
Then when your boss starts saying things like
Work isnt supposed to be fun!
Leave for england!

Thats my two bits. cheerio!

There are not many reasons I could come up with for you staying home. Your home city will always be there for you when you come back home. When you come back (assuming you do..which...you never know)......you will find most of the same people are still there doing the same thing (unless they are T-Punkers of course!!). Getting a chance to live and work in a different country is a tremendous opportunity that should not be overlooked. Its also great for a school application and a resume for that matter, even if the work you do in the U.K. does not directly relate to your future career. Good luck and keep us informed of how it works out. Watch out for the local lasses....those accents do me in every time.

How did your cousin get that dual-citizenship? That's something that I'm hopefully going to strive for!

Her Grandma was born in the UK so she has that connection. Its not on my side of the family though...so I'm outta luck

I'm not 100% sure what the whole procedure was...sorry

holy crap!!! i'm in exactly the same boat as you pinion!!! Got a good job that i worked hard to get, got a good promo coming up that i'd have a fair shot at getting, but a mate of mine went to england a year ago after we finished uni and while he hasn't got a career type job, he's having an absolute blast. However, i've already committed to going over to england cause i figured i can either let my career run my life, or I can run my life, i don't wanna get to 50 and have an excellent career but have had none of lifes experiences. Going to england wont kill your career, it will merely put it on hold while you go out and LIVE LIFE...well these are the things that i say to assure myself that i've made the right decision. It's still bloody scary giving up my job and my life here, but you can't go through life not knowing what else is out there.

That's my 2 cents anyways...
