What is the one job that one can do and earn some sweet $$$$, and meet great people...BAR TENDER!!!!

Check your local yellow pages, almost every city in North America has a bartending school, go take the course for a couple hundred bucks and you will be set to be a Bartender in any counrty. Its not a bad gig when your hurt'n for some dough, duckets or deniro....and the bartender always gets to go home with the girl (or boy), ( or girlz)..hehehehe...serious its just a something to think about before your travel for an extended period of time.

are u a bartender? Are those classes actually worth it or is learning on the job the best way to go I've been thinking about bartending lately. just hate the thought of workin every night though, although I'm sure the bar becomes your social life so it doesn't really matter. My best friend is in london right now making really good money at a bar. he works at an american tourisy bar right in trafalgar square, so the customers there actually tip quite a lot. He makes loads!

Bartenders make some good ciz-na$h, that´s for sure!

I worked at a few restaurants in the past and the bartenders, like 99% of the time, were hired in-house. That is to say, that they usually started waiting tables or bar-backing(the guy that helps the bartender by bringing glasses and assisting behind the bar).
how could that be a bad job? Meet people every night, take home a phat wad, and go home with the chicks! It´s all good B)

But are those courses worth it? Canadian Dude, did you do the course and then get a job through your certification?

I did take the course, and for someone who knew nothing more about booze than how to drink it, it is a handy asset and a good start. But be wary, if you think that the cost of the course is too high, check around at local community colleges, if your going to pay big money for a couse, you should just make it a college course. As a reference, mine cost $ 360 CDN 4 years ago

and from what i learned I probably made triple that doing odd ball work around, its just an easy way to make quick cash. A friend of mine who took the course with me left to travel the world and he has not come back yet, and he is paying for it mostly by being a bartender. Have you ever been to a bar/club/pub and had someone with an acccent serving your drinks, didn't ya just love hearing it? Well for those of us in North America, thats what we sound like when we are over seas. :D

I hear you about the accent thing. I have found that the Europeans that I´ve met while traveling and living in Europe, took a special interest to my accent as they were so used to hearing the British english.
They´ve got to have online courses and or all the drink recipes on the net to do your own crash course, don´t ya think? Could be another option. no?

Dude, if 2 poeple walk into a bar for a job and one says I have no experience in the bar gig, and the other says I read a book on bartending yesturday, they due/chiky who read the book is going to get the job.

Anything will help, anything to give ya a leg up on someone else, and an online deal sounds like the cheapest way to go brotha, I would do that FO SHEEZA!!!!! B)

the bartending class is a good idea, a friend of mine took it and found it to be very helpful. but he did warn me about one thing -- while bartending in england, he found out the hard way that the english don't tip. at all. nothin.

Dude, Just study that, make a diploma with a Microsoft Word, and badda-bing-badda-bang, instant bar tender, you may be able to pull it off dude!!!! I saw a show on Xtream-Bartending yesturday, and dam, these guys were good, better than Tom Cruise in Cocktail....

Not a bad idea! If it came down to it, all you have to do is prove the knowledge to them by mixing some drinks. I bet there´s probably a list of about 10 mixed drinks (cocktails) that will represent 80% of all your orders. Those would be the ones to practice, no

this is exactly what i hope to do when i go over in a few months...i think i will try the "fake" certification thing and learn how to make proper drinks from my friends....thank you so much for the insights!!!! i mean, i'm sure i'll be pooring more beer and popping bottles open than anything as a bartender there anyway, so how hard could it be!!!!

Dude, just make sure you use good paper, youkow the expensive kind with texture, you can get it at STAPLES for sure, and use a really good printer, like go to KINKOS to get it done and you will be all set!!!!

TO ALL THOSE THINKING OF TRYING BARTENDING SCHOOL:

Hey what's up all. This is my first time posting a message on the boards but this site rocks, I love it. Anyways, beware of the bartending school thing. I'm a bartender in the States and the only thing those schools will get you if you want a job is a big fat laugh by the guy whose hiring you. Now don't get me wrong, they are useful in terms of learning drinks but you can save yourself a helluva lotta money by buying a book or looking up recipes online. BUT DON'T FORGET TO PRACTICE!!!!! Knowing the ingredients doesn't mean a damn thing if you don't know how to actually make it. Go to Wal Mart or something and pick up some bar things like a jigger(measuring tool) , a shaker, and strainer and some glasses and practice w/ diff. color water. The better you look when they ask you to make a drink the better off you'll be in the job race. Good luck to everyone, TRAVEL ON!

JDog, great info dude, you are right, you can not base a whole carrier on what you learn in bartending school, you will learn the basics of what you need to start off, then after that, its all up to you, wether you stick to the brew, or you go umbrella and cherries on their ass...practise makes perfect...

Yeah, I guess as long as you get the info, whether by school or by guerilla tactics (always my preference!haha

), be sure to practice it- hard. The better off and more prepared you are, the better your results will be when it comes to your bar tending audition(s).

Damn it Im going to bartending school wont my folks be proud lol. Seriously though living in Northern small-town BC I probably can make more drinks then Tom Cruise lol but the good thign about the school is you get the valid paper saying You know what your doing. Also its experience and you can be a little more comfy with having to make a drink if they ask you, trust me I tried to BS my way through drink making once to impress some laides and god did it not work

still ended up with em though :P But anyways, Im gonna hit up the "serving it right" class as soon as one is available at the local collage (yeah they offer those classes at collage but you have to ask about it and it does not count as a credit)

Im a newbie on here. cool site

. I'm Scotish and have never heard of Bar tending school in my life. I've work in a bar most of my adult life and was hopeing to carry on when i go to Oz in Aug. Do you think i might need some proper training before i go?
