So everytime a topic comes up about what everyone does i tell them "I work for Carnival Cruise Lines". And everytime i get the same response... "i have wanted to work for a cruise line.. how did you get the job?", or something along those lines.

Acouple times on here i have told everyone i work on a cruise ship and i know acouple people have asked me some questions, so here it goes... i will try to tell you what i know, and what i have learned about the cruise industry in the last 2 years i have worked in it.

How did i get my job? I did go to an agency, I did pay anyone online to give me info, I did it the old fasion way... I reserched it. I went to travel websites and got names of cruise lines and then serched for the web site on the internet. Then when i found there web-site i would do a serach of the site for employment. 9 times out of 10 there would be a direct link to the hiring webpage, or an address to send you resume to... or something like that.

I busted my ass for 3 months sending out pictures and resumes to companies, appling on line ever week to every company i could find (if they had on-line applications i would apply atleast once a week so they get to know your name). Then one day i got a call, and then acouple days latter another... in the spand of 2 weeks i got calls from 4 companies for interviews, of course i took the first offer which was carnival, because there interview process was very quick... acouple days and i knew i had the job. So thats how i got it percistence.

I work in the entertainment department, I started as a assistant to the Cruise director and Social hosts... and got promoted in 6 months to a Social host.

Should i pay a web-site that promise me a job Hell NO!!! if a place says they will get you a job for money it's probably a scam. All the agencies i have heard of that are legit don't ask for money. They are paid by the cruise company to find them people... if they ask for money they will be doing something that you could do for free, they are probably just going to the website and appling for you online... I don't know for sure... but i have never heard of anyone paying an agency to get them a job. The agency may have little thing like you have to go to there doctor for a physical or something stupid like that, but you shouldn't have to pay up front... but don't be lazy you can do it by yourself.

What type of job should i apply for Ok this may sound bad, but i will tell it like it is on carnival. Alot of the "good jobs" that don't require training or schooling (ie techs, officers, accountants, dancers) are given to people from 1st world countries (sorry i hate to use that) like canada, australia, england, US etc. By good jobs i mean all the jobs with the privlages, like being able to go up and mingle with the guests while off duty... these are staff positions.

The other jobs like servers, bartenders, cleaners etc are given to people from other countries-- all over asia, eastern europe, south america etc. These jobs are consider "crew". they can only be up with the guest while working and have none or very little privleges... they work for basically tips..... i fucking hate this class system, but it is how it is.

Now when thinging of a job you may want to apply for look at the jobs you may have experience in. if you have worked with kids before then apply for a camp counsler. I did stage for many year and studied acting so i went for the entertainment department. Just look around the websites to see the different jobs.

how is life onboard The rumors are true, the rooms are small and you share them... the food is not very good, only on chicken finger day.... some days you just want to leave, but you can't.... but SUCK it up your on a ship, the parties are awsome, the booze is cheap in the crew bar, the walk to work is close, you meet people from all over the world, it's never a 9 to 5, your going to different places, and the money is tax free to all non-americans.

Now just to let you all know what i know is just from Carnival Cruise Lines and my experiences. I know some of the other lines are different. On the more high class line the servers are from all over, but i don't know much about that. I have heard that the other cheaper lines (Royal Carabian, Nowegian even princess and celebrity and holland america) are alot like carnival in the class systems... some worse than others... but the type of people for the same jobs are about the same.

If you are considering trying to work for one... i say "do it", it amazing and the pay is alright... plus you will meet great people... i have done it for 2 year and i am going back for 1 more 6-month contract before i call it quits and head off on my travel adventure.

any question leave a response and i will try to answer then or i will try to find an anwser from friends i know in the industry....

hoipe this helps,
ed

GREAT 411 Ed! I especially liked the "racist/classist" admission - sad, but very CRUCIAL "real world" info for us out here that I'm sure we won't read in their pamphlets. So, that's EXACTLY the type of realistic insider tips we need!

Thx so much for taking the time and typing the info! I have looked into it and will probably do it in the next couple of years. It helps that I live in a cruise port city I suppose. I know it's hard ass work but i can't resist making the american dollar!

btw do you need a second language to get any of the posistions?

Excellent info, Ed!

I think that most of us travelers have, at one point or another, wondered about how to go about getting a job on a cruise ship and what it would be like.

Thanks for giving us the breakdown !

Has anyone seen a harpist play on any cruise ships, like at the fancy restaurant or anything. If so, I would deffinantly apply for that position.

The had a harpist one or two nights on the Holland America cruise I went on, if I remember correctly... but other than pianists, according to the staffers I talked to, I recall most of the entertainers having to be multi-instrumentalists.
