I plan on doing the 'work in britain' thingy with bunac. And yeah, just wondered if anybody could share their experiences or tips.

I did it last winter and had a great time. What kind of job do you want to do? BUnac didnt really help in finding a job, but I was picky in what I didnt want to do. If nothing else, its worth doing BUnac just for the bank account they set you up with. If you want to meet other Americans, stay at the International Student House hostel - thats where they seem to congregate.

yeah but seriously, when Im overseas I dont generally seek out americans. If i wanted to hang out with americans I'd've stayed in america.

That said, bunac is a good idea. the planned socials are ok, I say just stay at a hostel for a while, make some friends, get a flat that way. also, thegumtree.com is very very useful in finding what you need.
