Default The state of the global recession and working in the commonwealth

Hello all.

Just wondering if anyone has any commentary as to what is happening in the world of work in the commonwealth (UK/NZ/AUS) right now?

Specifically for people from Canada or NA wanting to work abroad?

What industries are hurting the most?
What are the tourism/hospitality industries like?

Pondering a trip to ANZAC to work for a year.....

I'm an unemployed student, but from what I've heard, it's getting pretty hard to get a job - as I'm guessing it is anywhere right now!
I live in a part of sydney that is known for being packed with hundreds of great restaurants, so I think the hospitality industry looks like it's going fine - but then I have a bit of a skewed view from here. talking to the owner of my favourite restaurant (which is always busy), he said things have slowed down quite significantly and one of my friends working in another cafe was recently told they didn't have any work to give her.
I think your best bets would be looking in areas like mine where there are lots of restaurants (for sydney try Newtown, Leichhardt, Glebe, The Rocks) or if you're here in winter, there's always hospitality work in the ski resorts, where canadians are always welcome!
also, what do you mean by 'a trip to ANZAC'? you know that's not a place, right?

Haha yes I know Anzac isnt a place, but I was sure it was an Acronym for Australia and New Zealand?

What is the Australian economy like right now outside of the hospitality industry? Any signs of it picking up? If I went over, ideally I would like to work in an office or at a university or something.... I know traditionally travellers work in hospitality/tourism/ski hills... but that is not my bag...

ANZAC stands for Australia New Zealand Army Corp.

Australia isn't as hard hit as a lot of places. I think you'd be able to pick up work through temp agencies and such but I really have nothing to back that up.

Have a look at a couple of employment sites like seek.com.au, careerone.com.au to try and get a feel for things, or google temp agencies.

SGRHewitt struggled to find work but Perth is a lot different to the East Coast since it is so heavily based around mining.

Nothing ventured nothing gained.
