I would be lying if I said that it's a myth that they don't like Americans - there's a general anti-Americanism there. (there's quite a bit up here in Canada too!)
BUT that was under Bush and not Obama, and Syrians are generally friendly to anyone who is friendly to them. I met tons of Westerners, Americans, Brits, Kiwis who traveled through Syria no problems.
Also, Syria is one of the safest places in the Middle East because of the prevalence of the security services. They say you can leave your purse on the bus bench for a day, and nothing will happen to it, because everyone is afraid everyone is a secret police - who want nothing to happen to foreigners - Syria recieves bad press as it is.
