I'm planning on backpacking europe/south east asia upon the new year. However I would like to stay as long as possible and have read about the canadian working visa. Is there anything similar for us amuricans?

Try bunac.org for visas to the Uk (6 months, must have been a student recently), Ireland (4 months, same thing), Oz (4 months, just have to be under 30), and NZ (1 year, under 30). As for working anywhere else, unless you get an employer to sponser you, you're shit out of luck. There's always the option of working under the table, the black market exists everywhere (esp maj. European cities and SE Asia, shit..) but I would NOT reccommend that for someone who hasnt spent a lot of time traveling.
