Good deals to South or Central America?
Just wondering if anyone's found any sweet flight deals to anywhere in Central or South America. I'd be flying from somewhere in Northern CA, my friend would start the trip from Ohio. Any ideas? We're hoping for some cheap deal during spring break in March, I figured one of you might have wandered across something.

Those are some sweet deals mbo! The only thing I can recommend is depending where you want to go Cancun is a cheap place to catch a flight to CA. It's a few hours on the bus to Belize and then some more to Guatemala but if may be worth it depending what and where you want to see.

Sweet, you guys are a great help. An idea just popped into my head, going to Cuba. Anyone know how this is done? I know you'd have to book tickets from a company outside the States, think this is possible to book prior to landing in Mexico or wherever?

I would recommend just flying to Mexico City, stay a day or two and book it from there with a travel agent. Supposedly the Cuban authorities will stamp a piece of paper to stick in your passport, versus stamping your passport directly so U.S. Immigration doesn't know you went. If you do fly there, make sure you do not fly a U.S. or Canadian airline because they are known to report U.S. citizens who fly to Cuba to U.S. Customs and Immigration. Bring all your cash - no ATMs but from what I have heard they love U.S. dollars. I really want to do that sometime, so if you go I will love to hear details.
I believe Canadian Dude, one of our original members went there and posted about - if you do some searching I am sure you can find his posts. Good luck!

I sure wish there was a flight booking site that let me search by price, not destination. Wouldn't that be she sh*t?

^ That would be the shit!
I just found out that it only takes 30k miles on Alaska Air's mileage program to fly to South America. Don't know if that helps you or not, sorry.

Okay, should I go to Cancun for $231, or Belize and/or Guatemala for $422? The second option sounds more exciting, but I don't really know. We're not really looking for a solid party trip, which makes me want to stay away from Cancun. But there's a lot more to Cancun than the partying right? Hmmmm, help me decide, we wanna book right now.

Its only for spring break, so I don't have much time. But I have to get out of this country or I'm going to go insane. So I'm going March 14 - 24th. And thoughts of staying and leaving all the U.S. bullshit behind aren't far from my thoughts. I'm kinda a grumpy pissed dude these days, I want my old traveling & German lifestyle back.

Oh ya, so I don't know a thing about where I'm going or doing or anything yet. I won't be in El Salvador too long because I'm meeting a friend (nicwat, she's a lurker on the board) in Guatemala City on the 18th. From there we're gonna take off and check out some Mayan Ruins, and . . . that's the extent of our plans. She's gonna stay behind and do a language school in Guatemala . . . and if I'm ready to drop off the deep end by that point I'll just stay.

I enjoyed El Salvador...it's kind of the Rodney Dangerfield of Central America. The ritzy guidebooks poo-poo it as dangerous with unfriendly people (which was NOT my experience). The budget travel guides downplay it in favor of much more "cultural" Guatemala.
So, definitely take a couple days to see El Salvador, IMO. Feel free to read my travelog below and ask any questions about my E.S. trip. That said, doing the Mayan ruins in Tikal is awesome...highly recommended.
