How do you guys afford to travel for so long? especially when you're just out of high school? I've been busting me ass for this trip. Is everyone here rich?

I save all I can, which is actually 45% percent of my income, and as if it werent enough of an effort (after all I am a girl and enjoy buying clothes and make up... I've given up... I just buy whats really necessary) then I have to divide my savings by three, sice I get paid in pesos and I save in Euros and dollars. So I divide in three if I buy dollars, divide by 3.60 if i buy euros!
So... don't complain!! hehe, it takes me three times as much to save!!

This past August I met a german guy in Thailand that I ended up hanging out with for much the week I was there. He had been on the road for about a year and a half!! Had spent a lot of time in India, Nepal and all over SEA. He was planning on going back to India after Thailand because he absolutely loved it. Great guy. I just got an e-mail from him and he is finally heading back to Germany this week, after two years away. All I can say is WOW. That is going to be killer to go back to work after being a slack ass for that long, plus he is heading back to winter time. Poor bastard. Two years is a long freakin' time but good on him.

The current trip/away time will be 8 months, assuming I can stretch my money that long...I think I will be KIND OF ready to go home in August, but the second I start class that next week, I will want to be away again.
So that is why I`m planning to study in London for my last semester, Jan-May of next year.

3 months was the longest I've been away, and that was to Australia. It will soon be europe though, as I leave in a month for two years.

Well, technically I've been without a fixed address since November of 2005. I intend to continue as such until at least the beginning months of 2007, so that would be approximately 1 1/2 years of "traveling."
Not all of my travels bring me to exciting places, sometimes it's just hanging out with friends in my old haunts (such as Chicagoland, where I am right now) or being with family. I basically operate out of my pack, but I also have a storage unit in Manhattan (New York City).
I'd like to do an extended trip to Europe this year (4-6 months) and then some time in the middle east. Those will be strictly living out of my pack, so I guess those would qualify as the longest "trips" I've taken. So far, I did a month & a half in Europe.

I lived out of a car for 3 weeks touring the States. Figured I should get in the Great American Road Trip once before heading out to see the rest of the world. I'm on my way to Europe for 6 weeks this summer. Of course I'd love to have the time to stay for longer. Maybe when I graduate I'll just bum around Western Europe for 6 months.

Dude it is kinda hard for most of us(well personally speaking in general ) I own a little franchise oversea, it's my families but bleh I get 8% of everything so either way I bust my ass working (spinnin' & modeling). I've done all sorts of jobs like pumping gas from 5:45a.m till like 7p.M, been a head chef in hell's kitchen and promoter at the same time. Worked on media production and musical consultant crap, blah blah blah you do what you have to do to make the money and travel, right now I'm mostly involved with music and modeling. You also have to cut on alot of the stuff you are used to like in my case I tend to be a compulsice shopper when it comes to musical equipment and compact discs. . . I have not bought a CD without having heard 30 minutes of sampling and also I have been doing the Ebay thing with the equipment(very very much cheaper). Also as I have worked as a cook I get the nutrition for free (haha no waisting money in food) and as a DJ & promoter I get my drinks and nights pretty much for free. Also I purchase the monthly public transit pass which becomes a great deal if you have to move around, and my bike & skates also help me alot on my savings. Something I have been trying to solve or cure is my frequent runs to the mall for some converse (I am a converse shoe-head). yeah and your best bet is to get money from your parents as some wiseman once said "Live off your parents until you can live off your children" and also depends on which type of budget you are planning to head over with. :greenguy:

Well I have just finished an 8 month trip around Asia and Aus / NZ but I am off again next week around Europe.
I am then thinking of heading to Central America later in the year and then on to NZ again so it will be coming up o two years before I get home (wherever that is!).

Most I've done is a week in Berlin, but haven't done the multiple country thing yet.
Weird how only two people have done 5-6 months...

Think of it as this way dude, it takes you the same if we compare it to a person that only saves 15% here!

The longest I've been traveling is 2.5 weeks to Europe on a high school trip. i've lived in british columbia for various reasons for months at a time, but I don't know if that counts, being in the same country- but it sure was fun!
I'm going to Europe for 2 months and I've been saving for about 2 and a half years. the first year and a half it was sort of half-assed saving, putting away a little bit and I was waitressing so I made a lot of money so I could have probably tried a lot harder. I still live at home, and since January I've been putting away about half my paycheck. I'm going to be short about $1000 but I just think of it this way- I get my job back afterwards and now I finally know how to save money so it'll be easy to pay it off!
