Global Village Backpackers - Toronto
Hey guys,
Ironic since I am from Toronto...but I stayed at Global Village backpacker in Toronto last Friday night. And it was a great hostel, and a card security system - best I have ever seen at a hostel.
Friendly staff and great location: its right in smack middle of everything to see and do: King and Spadina.
To the north is Chinatown and Kensington Market.
To the west is Queen Street which is the indy artsy district.
To the east is clubbing/entertainment district.
To the south is skydome, CN tower (which my buddy from Seattle refered to as a 'giant space needle' - needless to say, I was offended)
It's a 20 min walk to the Train station
10 min walk to the subway (st. andrew)
5 min ride via street car to Spadina station
I recommend!

Trips (only counting recreational travel):
FIRST TRIP (2005): FIRST EUROTRIP EVER! UK, France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Holland
SECOND TRIP (2007): First Solo Trip! Greece, Turkey, Syria, Spain
2008: China (Beijing, Shanghai, Yangshuo) ...right before the Olympics!
2009: Japan & HK, Southern Spain
[size=1]2010: All over Lebanon, Ibiza (Spain), Oktoberfest (Germany), Thailand.
2011: India (Goa), Jordan, Jerusalem, San Sebastian (Spain), Amsterdam (again), London, Driving from Vancouver to L.A. (stopping in Portland, Seattle, San Fran and all the little stops), Montpellier (France), Geneva and Lausanne (Switzerland)

Yeah this place seems really awesome. I walk past it every day I head down to the rock climbing gym. Just for kicks I looked up reviews for it a bit ago and they're all pretty rave. It seems to have an awesome vibe and definitely in a wicked neighbourhood for toronto. Everything you need is within walking distance (and who doesn't like a little authentic chinese right next door~it's on the edge of china town)

On a serious note CB, what's the rate for a night? Did you stay in a dorm, double?

OK. Maybe I'll head up there but it would be cheaper to just get a couch.

Haha bear in mind that none of the Toronto Tpunks actually live IN the city. Well, minus me (for the next month) and I'm currently living in a 1 bedroom apt. with my 2 brothers (so the floor space is already taken )

Ya, that's just something us Ontario kids say to make it easier for people who have no idea where the small town we live in actually is! My whole life, I have always been from "a small town two hours north of Toronto!!"

^On a similar note, when traveling abroad, I have lived my entire life 100km west of Disney World.

Hah, mine is "just north of London", which usually gets the response "wow, great, it must be really cool living in London!". No, no, no, I don't live IN London, I just told you that!!!
(That was before I lived in Birmingham... now I'm not sure how I'd explain Birmingham. I know it's a big city, but do people really know where it is?)

Its like something like 29 bucks a night... yes, a little steep I know. And the room I stayed in was a quad, and it smelled like ASS. THe entire floor smelled like ASS.
Not that I did much sleeping anyway. It was my buddy's last night in Canada, so we stayed out most of the night.

Yeah explaining Birmingham, AL to the rest of the world is a bit difficult as well, unless they are aware of the Civil Rights Movement in the United States. I usually just tell them that it is close to Atlanta or to the north of Florida. Then I usually get quoted a verse from the song "Sweet Home Alabama" or something from Forest Gump, happened to me about 200 times while I was traveling.
