In Vancouver BC, avoid the C and N hostel on Main-its a disgusting, filthy building, in an awful part of town. Avoid the hostel across the street as well (can't recall the name). The guy running it is a prick. My buddy came out on the greyhound and stayed there. Check out was 11 am, and we were doing the 2 hour drive to pick him up. Manager wouldn't let Jon stay for a few more minutes, even in the lobby, and refused to let Jon leave a note for me with where he would be. When I asked if he had any idea where Jon might be, he said he had no clue. Jon went back while I was out looking for him, and the guy told Jon I had gone home-meanwhile I told him I would be checking coffee shops. We had just kept missing each other.
Any hostel in the greyhound station vicinity will be disgusting. I was stepping around needles looking for Jon, and a lot of unsavory characters stay at the hostels....

yup, i second that. c & N sucks. The one across the street is called the ivanhoe. The ivanhoe used to be a long term hotel and they have recently turned it into a hostel and painted the outside. I don't think it's changed much though. yeah all the places around the station are gross. Hostelling international runs a free shuttle from the bus station to their locations, so i would just do that instead. or walk to the skytrain and take the train downtown. But the neighbourhood ain't too too bad. I go there all the time (take the bus up to kamloops). Just ignore all the druggies and you'll be fine

Just looked up C&N Hostel Vancouver on the net and this is what they had to say about there hostel.
"C & N Backpackers Hostel is the oldest and most reputable Hostel in Vancouver. Sixteen years in the same location has garnered our International Hostel with a reputation for a safe, clean and friendly environment without having to spend a fortune to visit one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Situated at the eastern end of False Creek, we are surrounded by luxurious condos and are within walking distance of business, entertainment and recreational amenities such as public tennis courts, shore-line cycling, and scenic walking paths. "
Last time I was in Vancouver for the Molson Indy i got off the SkyTrain at the Science World stop. I didn't think that area was that dodgy. I think the C&N Hostel is near that location right? I found Hastings and Main to be alot worse.

Yeah i saw that on their website too. it's true that they are close to nice condos (city is trying to brighten up the area), nice walking path, false creek is near by. but i would hardly call it a reputable hostel or a clean one for that matter. There are waaaaaaay nicer ones in the city. As for the area being dodgy, well like i said it's not the nicest (LOTS of druggies across the street in the park), but your right main and hastings area is way worse.

I got off the greyhound once and was walking through the park. Said to my friend-look at all the cats. She said-those arent cats-those are huge rats!
Gotta watch that park-at night, it sucks but, try to walk around it. I know several people that were jumped for their packs. Not a nice area. I lived in one of those "jotels" once, couldn't figure out why the bathroom was clogging. There was a pair of dirty panties in the tank. The woman next door beat on her hubby, you had to step over garbage to get into your room etc.
Oh the places I lived when I was young and poor.
Oops-wait, I'm still young and poor, but now with a huge mortgage
Kamloops is pretty! We're thinking about picking up a piece of land in that area and building a cob cottage when we get back from Europe.

Diorama-I was checking your profile! I miss living in Vancouver-we're out in the boonies now-aka Mission. I miss Havana on Commercial so bad!
I have a house listing up on a home swap site, and I keep getting emails asking for restaurant ideas in Van. Feel a drive to Commercial coming on :P

Sushi! Lots of Sushi restaurants I noticed, the last time I was there (about 2 1/2 yrs ago). Also, Red Robins always did the trick for me :P
