Is it now safe to travel to Oaxaca? I've tried Googling for any latest news on the Oaxaca violence but no such luck. A friend of mine is interested to go there...

For dangerous areas you can always keep track on the US State Department's website and a website called The World's Most Dangerous Places.
They are usually pretty good at giving you an overdone view of how bad things are.
