I don't know if we've had a formal topic on this, and I'm curious about everyones' thoughts. The "place" doesn't necessarily have to be a city, it can be a country in general or even a specific place within a city. This is going to sound like a cop-out but I'm having a hard time picking one place! I really love Paris, because while it's one of the most touristed cities on earth and has some of the best museums/blah blah blah, you can stiill walk around the block from the Louvre or the Notre Dame and find a quiet place where you feel like you may be the only "tourist" around. I tend to like places that aren't really crawling with people, whether it's tourists OR locals. I can only take big crowds in small doses before I start to go batshit.
I really love mountains and the ocean too, so Seattle and the Pacific Northwest (and Vancouver) are pretty damn high on my list. Good thing I live here, huh?

I grew up in the PNW--it would still be my favorite place in the world had not the Californians all moved in and ruined it...

Today after 7 shots of vodka I would say I love my bed. No clue why...

You party animal, Bgirl! No wonder you and Tui are such a good match!
Anyway, I have a few faves, SV...
Here they are:
Favorite country: Italy (I could go back to again and again and still find new stuff I'm dying to see...)
Favorite Journey: Scotland (5 weeks there with two buddies makes memories last a lifetime)
Favorite Short Vacation: Jordan (ruins of Petra, sites from the Bible, Roman relics...)
Most Amazing Place: A tossup between the temples of Bagan in Burma (4,000 of them in a 25 square mile area) and the jungle-clad ruins of neighboring Angkor Wat, in Cambodia (popularized by Angela Jolie in Tomb Raider).
Biggest Surprise: How scenic Amsterdam and Holland are (with canals, 3-storey gabled buildings, water, windmills).
Biggest Disappointment: Paris (Honestly, I don't know what the fuss is all about).
Friendliest People: Cambodians
All right, what about the rest of you???

Granted, I'm not quite as seasoned a traveller as some people on this site
...But I spent a short time in Peru a couple years back, and it was completely amazing. That country has everything, from Macchu Piccu to rainforest, from desert to beach. The people are incredible, and the weather was beautiful. It was an unforgettable experience.

My current favourite places:
East Village, New York City
De Pijp, Amsterdam (tho it's been getting boring lately)
Montreal (the friendliest people in a big city)
Nuff' said....

mine would be Toyohashi, Japan. it's not touristy really, it's just a real place where real people live. and i feel that way about it because i've been all over the world (even tough there is still a lot to go) and Toyohashi is the place that feels most like home. how simple, eh?

This is a tough one as there are so many places I love. The top three would have to be
Amsterdam - Not for everyone, but there really is no city like it and I kind of like the feeling you get that you are in a place where anything goes. Not to mention there is some beautiful scenery as worldwidemike mentioned.
Madrid - Friendly people, great tapas, unbeatable nightlife
Munich - It seemed like everyone was friendly, or maybe just drunk . But I also loved the food there, with all the types of sausages and other Bavarian cuisine. The huge park in the town is a great place to relax. Where else can you see people surfing in a river in the middle of a city?
