Depends where you're going and what you want to do. If you plan to see most of the main sights, museums etc in western Europe, it can save you $$$, but if you're travelling in eastern Europe, Asia etc. it won't be as useful. A lot of places we went wouldn't accept it, even some that had the sign on the window! Usually the travel guides list the ISIC prices for various places, so if you figure out generally which ones you seriously plan to see, tot up and see if it would pay for itself. If it's within a couple of dollars either way, I'd say it's worth it, because you may go to some other places or be able to use it at restaurants or bars as well.

Another little known tip, if you're a member of certain museums, zoos, aquaria, or other cultural associations already, sometimes they have reciprocal privileges with others around the country and around the world. So if you already are a member, it's worth checking with their membership office to see if that can save you the price of admission on your journey.

I've gotten two in the past few years. The first time, it was worth it because first of all, I get it free because it's part of my Uni tuition and second, there was a deal that your first time using it (or something along these lines) on VIA Rail you get 16 bucks (cost of the card if I didn't get it through uni) off the trip, which you alread get at the student rate with the card.

Second time I got it was a complete waste. I got it before my trip to Europe last summer and I didn't need it anywhere I went. Most of the museums, galleries etc. had discounts based on age, not whether you're a student or not.

so are most discounts on age then? because i wanted to get a student card but i'm not a student anymore (I went back to my high school and asked very nicely for a letter but they said no) so it looks like i'll have to just get a youth card. I was wondering whether it would be very useful?

If you're under 26 you should be able to qualify for youth discounts with a youth card - that can wind up saving quite a bit...if it doesn't cost too much, I'd get one. (except, I'm too old.)
