Default Moving to the UK! <3

I turn 31 next year, and it's my plan to take advantage of my chance to use a Youth Mobility Scheme Visa (formerly the holiday makers) and move to the UK for a couple years while I still qualify.

What I'd really like to do, what I've been saving for, is work for 3-6 months travel for 3 months, rinse and repeat... I think it'll be a blast, problem is I'm having some trouble deciding where to base myself for the first work stretch... the plan is to leave early July 2010... I know that I don't love London, and I LOVE Scotland, although N. Ireland is lovely as well... lol, so basically, I'm caught in the land to too many choices! I know the UK is expensive, and I'm prepared for that, but does anyone have any ideas? Places where the cost of living isn't TOO insane and I might be able to find a job? :D

Congratulations!! Make sure its somewhere you love, London may have better chances of employment but if you won't be happy living there than maybe try Scotland or Northern Ireland. Personally, I am partial to Wales but each to their own.

Ohh, I've never been to Wales.... Like I said, I plan to move 3 or 4 times during my two years there, I'd really like to be able to live in Britian proper, Wales, Scotland and N. Ireland by the end.... But we'll see... They'll definitely be heaps of inter-uk travel on weekends and such, so I'd love to hear about great places in Wales.

Scotland is supposed to be pretty cheap. I keep hearing storeys on the radio about how you can get a pint for £1 there when it cost over €4 hear. The price of pints gets discussed fairly regular on the radio here.

I think youd be lucky to get a pint for quid..maybe some student pubs or happy hours but it would probably be piss weak..

Oh yeah, sorry it was on special offer, it was in one of those chain pubs that do the carvery lunch/dinner, witherspoons I think they're called.

Happy hours and the like are technically illegal here in Ireland. What's even worse is that 40% of the political party in power in Ireland Fianna Fail (yes our leaders have fail in their title) own pubs so there's a horrendous cartel going that sees drink prices fixed high and any pub that doesn't toe the line gets bullied by the government. I'm almost glad we're in a recession and all these people are going out of business.

too bad Bellelass (sp?) isn't still around. She lived and worked in london for awhile. She would have some good tips. you maybe able to PM her.

And Briley lives in Liverpool. She may be able to help as well.

It's a bit later than the OP, but I would suggest staying away from london unless you've got the money to do it. Housing is the most expensive in the UK! Food and drink prices are as well. Most of the big cities in the UK are filled with people from all countries. I lived in Sheffield and now Newcastle, but I still would love to try Edinburgh. It's still big and international, but cheaper and the people are more friendly! Hope you have a great time no matter where you end up!

What nationality are you - passport country? I'd love to move over there as well but don't think it's available to me (American) But definitely stay away from London if you're on a budget, it's ridiculously expensive!!!
