K so I know the title of the post sounds stupid but I was wondering if I will be able to get around in Venice for a day without knowing any Italian at all... I will be landing in Venice and then I have to make my way to the Ferry port... and not knowing the word for boat or water or anything makes me a little nervous. I will then have a day to spend in Venice on my way back from Greece...

is it worth gettnig an italian phrase book for the day I'll be there or do you think I'll be able to fudge my way through?

It's a personal policy of mine to have a working knowledge - or at least the tourist basics - of a language at hand when I go somewhere, even for a short trip. It seems to make a world of difference.. although, yeah, one day is VERY short.

I think a phrasebook might be a good idea.. Either that or take the common phrases you think you'll be using and feed 'em into the English-to-Italian translater at babelfish.altavista.com. Their translations aren't always 100% accurate, but they're good enough for a day of asking directions, etc... (Also learn the words for left, right, straight ahead, etc.)

Ex: Dove è il traghetto? (where is the ferry?)
Ex: Giri a destra sulla via seguente (Turn right on the next street.)

Yeah that's a good idea... thansk for the Ferry translation I'm sure that will come in major handy... Unless anyone actually knows how to get to the Ferry port.
