Hey everyone, I'm nicole and I'm new to TP. I'm currently @ Ft. Huachuca, AZ (yes, I'm an army girl), originally from Chicago... I'm 21 and am about a semester away from my degree in political science. I went active duty in the Army and am here in AZ until Sept. 28th. I am getting about $4000 as a signing bonus and so I was planning on taking 2 weeks leave and using that money to go backpacking sometime between Oct. 1 and December 31st (not sure yet, depends on my duty station --hopefully Germany or Korea, but regardless, I'll wind up in Iraq, so I wanted to travel a bit before the sand box). Anyway, I haven't really been a lot of places, I have been to Canada and Mexico (went to Cancun but ended up heading to the Mayan villages and ruins in Chichen-Itza and it was great).
I'm looking to go somewhere off the beaten path. I was thinking Laos, somewhere in Africa, Thailand, or India... I have heard mixed things about India so I don't know... I am doing Europe next summer with friends so I am saving that, plus if I get put in Germany I can travel at my leasure (same with getting stationed in South Korea), but anyway yeah... Also looking for someone to travel with maybe if anyone wants to go somewhere sometime between October and the first of January (I gotta used up my 30 days leave before Jan 1 2007)
But yeah, sorry this is kinda long, just wanted to say hey and get some travel advice!
Have a good one ,
Nicole

Welcome on travelpunk !
Where are you going in Europe this summer ? There are plenty of tpunks you could meet up for a beer.
We'll be glad to help you out with your chosen destination for this fall, once you'll know where you're going. By the way, Laos is a great country, and one of the few "genuine and intact" asian culture. Better to go before it's become westernized.

I can't believe you live there!! I lived at Sierra Vista while my Dad was stationed at Ft Huachuca!I went to Buena High (but this was back in 1999). Man, they have THE BEST sunrises there!! I loved it... Ever gone horseback riding in the mountains? Argh! I loved it there! So different rfom anything I've ever seen.
(For those of you who've never been... this is what the area around my school looked like:
I hope you're having a great time!

Well, I'm from Argentina, and I live in Buenos Aires. My Dad was invited by the US Army to do some sort of course there (not sure what it was, but there were officers from all over the world). It was a great experience. I loved living in a small "city" for a change. When we first arrived SV didnt have it's mall... hahah you can imagine??... only the McDonalds, Domino and Peter Piper Pizza and the pizza place at the PX after mass, and that was about it!!
But I loved it anyway!

Hello and welcome. I'm currently living in Chicago. Ah, how I long for Arizona esque weather in the winter. My brother in law and his wife (both Army officers) are stationed in Baumholder, Germany... My brother in law is currently in the sandbox and his wife was left back to take weekend trips around Europe. Good area to be stationed!

Welcome to tpunk!
Come to south east asia...although if I had two weeks I'd probably head somewhere relatively isolated so I wouldn't feel so tempted to stay on and travel everywhere accessible in the surrounding area, especially if it involved a hefty plane ticket. :P
