Welcome Jess! Lots of options for you. I am in Mexico City right now for a week and saw some great ruins yesterday, an ancient city called Teotihuacan. Central America is even cheaper than Mexico and full of backpackers. SE Asia is also a good idea, ancient cities in Thailand and Cambodia....cheap, lots of backpackers. Good luck!!

Hey! welcome welcome!
Yup for ruins, the Aegean (western) coast of Turkey has more roman ruins than Italy. Syria has the best ruins in my opinion, but its a little more risky to travel there as a single female.
Have you backpacked before? A one month trip alone (not to mention a one YEAR trip) is no small feat...
