i'm not sure how long you'll be in madrid but for day trips you might want to check out Toledo, Segovia, and Salamanca.
Segovia is a small town and has some cool narrow streets to walk through. it is most well known for the aquaduct that runs through the city and was built by the romans.
Toleda is a little more touristy than Segovia. It has a cool feel to the city too. It is known around the world for its swords so about half the shops sell some cool swords that are kinda fun to look at.
Salamanca is most well known for its university. it is one of the oldest in europe and has some cool architeture. the plaza mayor there is a classic example of a spanish plaza and the huge amount of college students makes the night life fun.
i would suggest going to Valladolid too. the place has alot of history and while it isnt the most touristy spot there are alot of fun bars and good times to be had there, there are some tourist type activities there as well, cervantes lived there and so did chris columbus. granted i used to live there so it has a special place in my heart.
have fun in spain.
