well - the last time i was on vacation was this march past... so you know what that means, kids!
IT'S TICKET TIME!!
i've just booked tickets for our next trip = egypt! (with a 3-night stint in a'dam!)
my main point in writing this though, is to alert you of northwest airlines' great deals since entering bankruptcy...
initially i had priced our tickets (2 sets of round trip tickets) at $1275 p/p - after the bankruptcy though we got them for $996 p/p - it was a great deal! that's a total savings of $550 and change!
i just wanted to suggest that ya'll watch their website for any other great deals you may like to take advantage of!
THANK GOD I HAVE SOMETHING FUN PLANNED NOW~

If I remember right, you went to Amsterdam the last time because they were gonna outlaw weed on the street right? Did they ever do that?

yeah, when we went for thanksgiving last year i had heard that they were outlawing the whole pot aspect of a'dam... and i have still heard reports of that being an ultimate goal for the city BUT they're doing it coffeshop by coffeshop rather than all at once (at least from the e-rumors i have heard). i think it would be a crying shame too... i'm hoping to have had my fair share of the place though before this finally goes down.
i have a few questions now if anyone can answer them (U2!):
we only have 8.5 days in egypt and that's not much. since cairo is such a huge city, i want to allow ample time to get to know the place, exploring as much as i can there. would someone please critique this itinerary?
cairo - 5 days
alexandria - 2 days
marsa matruh - 1 day see for yourself!
i know we're missing luxor and all, and even though i've heard that the sights are even more impressive there than at giza - i hate crowds.. a lot. knowing that i just HAVE to see the pyramids at giza, i figured i would cut luxor and spare my sanity all of those tons of people and the oppressive heat. but maybe i'm a fool?

It sounds pretty good. I don't know about the oasis but damn, that pic looks incredible!!!!!
Alexandria is not that far away. If I remember right, it is a little over 2 hours by train. I liked it, but found that a day there was enough. I left early in the morning and came back that same night. You might think about that. I thought it was mostly cool seeing the ocean, the famous library (though of course the ancient one is long gone and in its place is an ultra new one) and there are some newer ruins (like 18th-19th century). Plus of course some incredible seafood. So you might think about just a day there, though if you're not a morning person or don't want to push it, coming back the next day would be more laid back.
I don't mean to complicate things but Luxor was......incredible. I just thought it was SO different than Cairo and Alexandria. It wasn't THAT crowded either (I went in March; when are you going?) But I guess it depends. I was/am hugely into Egyptian history and had studied most of the ruins in Luxor in several art history classes, so I really wanted to see them. It is DEFINITELY much hotter there but it seems sooooooooo much smaller than Cairo and the river is gorgeous; you take a little boat across to get to the Valley of the Kings and Temple of Hapshetsut....and you really feel like you're more out in the desert. (The pyramids in Cairo are really not in the "desert"; they are at the tip of the start of it but plopped right next to the city; most people don't realize that.)
Adding that to an itinerary definitely complicates things. It means a plane ride and I think that was about two hours. I had a package sort of deal so I'm not sure how expensive it is by itself. It's pretty easy to get from the airport into town though; it can't be more than 5 miles away.
Can you cut out Amsterdam to have more time? Or is that non-negotiable?
I don't know; it's too bad you don't have a little more time! It's a tough call.

I should add that you can see a lot of Cairo in 5 days. You won't miss anything major. You could easily have a day just for the pyramids, a day for the Egyptian museum, a day for the Christian area, a day for the markets, etc.

hey, thanks for the fast-ass reply! ... and no, a'dam isn't negotiable! we had considered it heavily and then said, nah - after 8 days of 'roughing' it in egypt, great hash, great art, great food and the utmost in luxury is definitely in order!
so yeah, i didn't really want to hear you say that about luxor - but i did, i really did. we had never considered flying down to luxor cause we assumed it would be quite expensive, but it's gonna cost us about $50us each to overnight train there anyway - i'll look into that.
i'll have to talk to david tonight and see what he thinks, but hey, how long do you think we NEED in luxor to get the full jist of things? maybe i should nix marsa matruh and cut alex and cairo back by one day each to gain the trip down to luxor... shit.
i hate new jobs and following 2-week crap vacation protocol - fucking american nazis!
edited for typographical errors!

if you're going to fly all the way down there, i'd say you should spend at least 2 days.
You could see most everything in two days............get there one morning and leave the following night....
