What's up guys. I've been reading these forums for months now, but never actually posted anything. I'm 21 years old, and have taken a year off school to work in the Middle East on a defense contract...

I've learned a lot just by reading the forums, and I hope there will be questions and discussions I can contribute to in the future...

Welcome - so, was going to the ME optional for you? That's pretty cool - you're brave.

Welcome to the boards!

always good to see someone new and it looks like you'll have a lot of good information to contribute.

So, where in the Middle East are you? I'm planning on heading over there again in either September or November...or both!

Sorry for the delay- I was out for a few days. I'm working in Iraq right now. There's all kinds of incredible stuff to see, but travel's still pretty limited here (for obvious reasons). And yeah, it was my choice to come over here. It was a combination of the adventure/danger/money and the ability to travel during vacations. Kind of the result of a sophomore year "quarter-life crisis" I guess.

Cheers-

Since I am here, I can't talk much about the politics of it without being a hypocrite. My honest opinion is that we never should have come here, but now that we have- there's no good way out.

It has been interesting, to say the least. I spent a year in Fallujah before coming to work in Baghdad (where I am now). I've gotten to know some great people here, and my respect for the culture has grown immensely.

I'm trying to pick up Arabic, to help with traveling in the region, but all I can remember is the curse words.

Welcome to the boards! I used to live in Texas, in Waco. Where in Texas are you from? We had a great Tpunk meet up in Austin last year actually...Still a little foggy from that night though!

Enjoy your stay here...You will grow to love it like we do!
