Sorry to hear that, Space Virgin!

I had a couple dishwashers when I was grill cook in another place peeling tigers with me. After a few minutes he excused himself (we did about 10 lbs a day there). Dissappeared for 20 minutes+, at which point we were done with that batch...

He came back, completely white. I asked him what happened, he told me "i started to feel sick, so i went to the bathroom and started throwing up everywhere."

I asked him if he was allergic to shrimp or shellfish... he said he didn't know, but if he ate shrimp he got really sick...

Knuckleheaded junkie coulda died because I had him peeling shrimp and he had no fucking idea (and I didn't, either) that he was allergic!!!

The head chef of a restaurant around the corner is allergic, deathly, to fish. Not shell fish, but swimming fish. The sheer smell, raw or cooked makes him swell shut. Been working in the business for 25 years. Go figure!

And beyond the usual peanut allergies, I've seen some real winners. Current favorite is gluten. can't have any flour-based products. Or the garlic folks- allergic to garlic, shallots, onions, scallions, anything in that family... Makes me wonder if all the hormones we put into food for growing purposes are to blame... Growing up, the seafood/shellfish, peanut, and lactose tolerance allergies were the only ones i've heard of. Always that kid in 1st grade who couldn't eat a PB&J...

Yeah, KCL is allergic to fish like that. It's not something to mess with, that's for sure! When I was little, I could eat crab and lobster til the cows came home. I wasn't overly fond of clams but I liked clam chowder. The allergy came on slowly over time and now I just don't mess with it. It's one of the reasons I'm really cautious about eating sushi-- you never know what all has been around the surfaces the food is prepared on.

Food allergies make little if any sense to me. Peanuts, shellfish, swimming fish, gluten, garlic, onion, etc etc etc. The best are the folks that come into my restaurant that are allergic to a bunch of shit.... sorry if I was chopping onion, or my dry towel touched one... When waiting tables, i often asked folks how they could even go out to dinner given their allergies and not be concerned, legitimately...

I'm very allergic to cats, and to long hair dogs (essentially animal dander), but thats animals in general.

Being allergic to one type of shellfish, but not another, like say shrimp, but not crabs makes little sense. Granted, crabs, lobster, and shrimp are all crustaceans, but still... WTF?!

Heh.. I'm allergic to shrimp, but not other crustaceans.. still, I'll eat shrimp. Just gotta remember to take an antihistamine so I don't break out!

are chefs phsycos? That's just sumfin my brother experienced, having a chef throw a piece a meat him and stuff. but GOODLUCK on becoming a good chef!!!

The combination of high heat, stress, and low pay makes most chefs borderline delusional scizophrenic socially unadapted pirates with a penchant for buggery and temper tantrums!

I'm pretty crazy, but my head chef is a raving lunatic (actually, he's relatively well-adjusted, just whines a lot). I worked with a chef a couple times that scared even me... throwing knives and whatever was handy, breaking shit, etc etc etc if something went a little awry. Him holding a 12" knife and pointing it in the fave of some server was pretty extreme...

Okay, I admit it. The past two days have been harrowing at work. In between my dishwasher showing up 2 hours late and me getting slammed with 5 tables at once multiple times (Sunday Monday Tuesday I run the line by myself. All three stations...), I've come to realize that yes, we are ALL psycho.
