Default Ello everyone

Hi,

I'm AK and I'm really happy to find these boards. I'm a college senior set to graduate this May and while all my friends have had fun being abroad for semesters I never took that challenge and it is my BIGGEST regret graduating university that I never did this. My very good friend shares the regret and as a graduation present to ourselves to reward ourselves for working really hard through school we are planning a trip abroad for 1.5-2 weeks in Europe. We want to spent 3-4 days at 3-4 major European cities.

We're thinking Paris, somewhere in Switzerland, and somewhere in Germany. Travel via EuroRail.

The challenges we face:

1. FLIGHTS. - I'm having an extremely hard time finding flights, I keep hearing of people that got a $500-600 flight from JFK to London/Paris/Berlin and I just want to ask HOW HOW HOW? If anyone knows of a good resource to purchase tickets please let me know! I couldn't find a thread on here regarding that.

2. THINGS TO DO. - We hate to do touristy stuff and well I'm not sure how to figure out cool things to do in cities. Paris, for example, just seems so cool..we want to go to soirees! But how to get invited and find our way around? Is it easy to befriend locals who can show us the REAL cool stuff? For example, I am from the NYC area and can show a visitor a HELL of a lot better time than them going to the city and doing touristy stuff..

hey welcome to the boards. as for flights, kayak.com is a pretty good search engine. although june isn't exactly low season so it'll be harder to find the cheapest flights. I've also recently been looking at skyscanner.com. On skyscanner with just a quick peek i found a flight from JFK - Paris leaving late may returning early june for under $600. and i think they include taxes in their search prices.

As far as trying to get in with the locals, its pretty tough when you're backpacking and staying in hostels. you'll normally just be hanging around other foreigners from the hostel. your best bet would be to try to couchsurf with locals. couchsurfing.com is a great website with a great idea.

Well, i hope i've been of at least a little help. Lemme know if I can help any other way. With dates i could help search for a flight better if you need.

that cheap flight i found is on XL airways france. never heard of them. all the others seem to be $800+. But XL's website is in french and I don't see any option to switch languages.
