Hi! New here and planning a trip in july
I'm a female student in australia whose going on exchange for 5 months to the netherlands but planning to backpack europe for five weeks before.
going to be arriving in amsterdam 14th July and then have plans (loose) for spain and portugal with a friend in august. But really want to go to berlin, munich and budapest in between then.
is it safe to travel these cities as a 20 year old by myself?
never travelled alone before..eeep.
looking forward to hear from you!

Welcome to the boards!
Since you have essentially two weeks to get to Spain, I would say that is definitely doable. Berlin, Budapest and Munich are not super easy to travel between via train if you go in that order. Berlin to Munich by train is pretty quick, easy and expensive. I took a 6 hour bus ride for about half the price. There is a night train to Budapest from Munich.
Alternatively, Air Berlin flies between Berlin and Budapest for about 75 Euros one way in July. You can plan on 3-4 days per city (depending on when you are meeting in August) with up to a day of transit in between (depending on how much you are willing to spend to get yourself there quicker). If you end up on a bus or train, and you end up in Spain a few days into August you may consider adding Prague to your itinerary. It makes a good in between stop between Berlin and Budapest (or even Berlin and Munich).
There are lots of flights between Munich and Spain. Good luck!
And don't worry about being a 20 year old girl, Europe is a 20 something solo backpackers paradise.

If you can walk around your own city in AUS by yourself, you can do the same in any of those European cities.
And just remember that solo backpacking doesn't mean you'll be alone... you'll make friends at hostels and probably be alone for limited periods of time.
and welcome!
