Default Hey, hi, hello, what?

Hi there, my name is Katie, I've been a-lurking for a while and wanted to say hello. Being the nerd that I am, I want to combine backpacking with academics, so I'm currently planning an independent research project that I want to get started on while I'm backpacking in Northern Ireland and Scotland next summer. I'm hoping to visit eco-villages there, and get an idea of what I am capable of doing on my own, being away from home by myself for the first time. :3

Anyway, I'm probably going to continue lurking here for a while, but now you all know who I am! Say hello if you would like.

Welcome! Sounds like an interesting project. I've been to Northern Ireland, and had a ton of fun there. Wish I could have made it to Scotland. Don't be afraid to post questions when they come up.

My research is actually not being funded by the school, since I am a terribly stubborn overachiever and have decided to simply do it for my own pleasure.. :P Though I might get a few scholarships, since I submitted some applications a couple weeks ago.

Basically, I'm majoring in (and hopelessly in love with!) developmental psychology, so my aim is to do ethnographic research focusing on child-rearing goals and practices of parents in intentional communities (chiefly eco-villages).

Oh, and eco-villages are quite nifty little places where some people who care about living sustainably and are concerned with ecological issues might go to live together. There are a lot of variations, but that is the gist of it. Some relatively well-known ones are Tamera (Portugal) and Findhorn (Scotland).

that's cool. so it's not really the difference in child-rearing having to do with diferent regions, but more child rearing in eco-villages. interesting. so, you should post more about this while you're doing it. i'm sure many...myself included, would be very interested. hell, be wild...claim your own thread!

the bit of scotland i saw was breathe taking. very beautiful. AND some great hiking opportunities.

welcome to the boards! your research sounds very interesting. I've had to read quite a few ethnographies this quarter (anthropology major) and they're so fascinating.

and there's no shame in combining academics and backpacking! that's the best! :D

two words: Grant Writing

It's an awesome proposal, and I would bet that you could get a grant to help fund your studies! Way to extend the trip and conserve resources!

Welcome!!

There's a show called nationwide in Ireland that did a report about a school up the north for special needs kids. It was also a working farm where they made their own gas out of the waste of the farm. They where able to run 5 building (one a large school) and still have enough gas left over to sell on to the national suply board. I still can't understand why everyone hasn't moved over to that system.

If you go to the www.rte.ie website they have a good few shows on this kind of stuff.
