Hi there
Hello everyone
I think i may as well say hello after lurking for a few days (and spending far to much time reading the board when i should of been working)
My name is Scott and i live in a tiny village just outside of Leicester in england and this year i am finally doing what i have planned since i was 16 (im 22 now) and going to backpack europe for a month (or more, depending on funds)
The plan is to fly out to Italy around the 5th of august and then head east a bit, (slovakia, czech republic) then back toward the centre with no real route planned using my interrail ticket and just getting on whichever train other travellers/freinds/how i feel do(is this a bad idea?). I will be going solo since my mate has finally decided he cant afford it after 4 months of telling me he is going to be ready, but i think this is probably better for me really since im quite a quiet/laid back person and im hoping the trip will give me some direction
I have a few questions regarding train passes and things so expect to see a few threads pop up soon
Ive enjoyed what ive read on here so far and looking forward to contributing
so er, Hi

its the freindliest village ever, 2 really freindly pubs, i just 40 min from town and the last bus in is 6:45, so it gets a little boring

Nice! Melton myself. Did you go to King Edward or a school in Leicester? Just asking because I went to King Edward and live in that area.
Never been to the Czech Republic myself but I know many here have you will get some great advice.

Hopefully then you'll know what to expect when you go to the Czech Republic then if you've been before. I would love to visit and have put it on my list of places I need to see before going back to Canada.

hey welcome! I personally think the best way to go is to have no plan, but a general direction/idea of what you wanna see! life happens and itineraries get thrown out. a lot of people's friends back out but going solo is better, there are so many people to meet that you'll never really be alone

Hello Scott, welcome to the boards. A fellow-Midlander here (although not as close in proximaty as you and Ben!). Hope you get all the info you need (and more!) on your upcoming trip!

Thanks all
didnt realise there was so many english on here actually, thought it was mainly american/canadian :D
ive been around europe a bit before (was lucky enough to do a 2 week cruise last year, so got to see super expensive places like monaco and pisa) but never on my own so a bit nervous about that, but the more i read up it does seem that solo is the way to go.
Just working on convincing my parents of that. and then i have to tell my boss i want 6 or so weeks off
quick question, with no set plan and dates do you think its worth booking a return fight/trip? i wasnt going to. I was thinking of just putting £100 or so aside to cover the cost of a return ticket and getting it from easyjet when my money is about gone (working while im gone is an option im thinking about, need to research that a bit)

Ah cool cool.
As Lizz said traveling solo does have its advantages. Thing about me is, I am not really an open person so when I travel with a friend I pretty much stick to them. Traveling alone forces me to open up and I rarely regret it.
On the other hand, its nice to have a friend.
