Default I got laid off

I think this is the only place I can post this and people will not assume I am

1.) A passive-aggressive ass
2.) In denial
3.) A little crazy

I got laid off from a good job :D

When I got back from Japan I was really starting to miss traveling again and with a coworker getting the boot I was sort of leaning toward quitting if I had to in a few months. It would let me get back to my background in engineering and of course, travel. Long term.

Every person I tell this to starts off saying "I'm sorry to hear that" and then transitions to "Oh, actually that sounds pretty good" but usually there is a touch of "poor kid" associated with it. Anyone else have something like this happen, where under most circumstances it is a disaster but for you, it rocks?

I get to go back to school, travel, and get severence/an education allowance! What is doubly great is that my graduate courses are available online. If I can take the course from my living room why not from Malaga, Heidelberg, or Tokyo? I can have it all! So I am a bit bummed to leave genuine friends behind, but I am so excited about what will happen between now and 2009. I am going to take SCUBA lessons, tackle school with new energy, do an RTW and be limited only by my appetite for sampling new things.

good stuff - getting laid off can sometimes be a godsend. get out into the world, use that money to learn things youd never learn back home and live the dream while i dream of a job to get laid off from

It seems to me it's the best thing that could happen to you, providing everything you wanted : more education and travel time !

You're an engineer ? Have you thought of Engineers withouth Borders ?

Well, getting laid off >>>>> quitting because you get the big cushy severance package. If you were thinking of leaving anyways...getting laid off is definitely the way to go. And actually, many companies resist laying you off unless they really have to in order to avoid paying out that pricey package.

CONGRATS!!!!

Haha sounds weird to say to someone who was just laid off, but honestly it sounds like you got the long end of the stick, since you were planning on quitting anyways. So jump up & down baby, you got laid off!

The good thing about being Laid off vs. quitting is that you usually get a severance package and you can collect unemployment so you still have some money coming in.

I am a firm believer that everything happens for a reason so go out there and do what it is you truly want to do. Awesome news in my opinion

Sorry about that, man - I've been laid off twice, and each time used it as an opportunity to do things (cheaply) that I may not have been able to do before, such as travel (locally) and get personal projects (art, music, etc.) done. Downtime isn't necessarily awful. Not having cash does suck, though!
