Hi, I joined abit ago and started lurking and thought I should introduce myself. Im looking at taking a semester of uni and going backpacking around Europe for 2/3 months money dependent and so have been reading through and taking notes of different things although I should be studying for exams.
Im looking at leaving early september. Is this a good time to head off while it's still kinda warm and the crowds have started to die down abit (when exactly is peak time? july/august?)
My other question is I want to head to Munich for Oktoberfest and by all accounts I should book a hostel there early, but how early would I need to book to get a well located hostel.
Thanks alot

Hi, and welcome!
Book it by may. That is when I booked mine and it was almost booked out. All the hostels near the train station are good--Jagers, Wombats (Aussie-Infested!), and Euro Youth are all next door to each other and right next to the train station.
The Crowds die down the first week of September in most places North. South is longer because of longer summer.
Hope this helps!
Foo

Hello there. Everywhere except Munich will have fewer crowds than if you go in the summer. Notice I said "fewER"... there will still be a lot of travelers. Ticket prices will still be high but less than if you were to leave in, say, June or July. Munich is great. I stayed at the Euro Youth hostel when I was there and it was just fine. It's very large.
