Hey Everyone,
My name’s Grace and I’m a senior at Cornell University. I stumbled across this sight while planning for my next Europe backpacking trip for this winter. I’ve found so much great info already – you guys rock :D
This summer I’m in South East Asia doing an internship in Singapore during the week and traveling around the region on weekends. I’m going to Japan the first week of August – if anyone has any advice/reccomendations about Kyoto or Tokyo definitely let me know. My basic summer itinerary is below. If anyone is planning on going to any of these places and wants to chat about it, I love talking about places to go and things to see.
Summer 06:
5.23 - 6.1 Hawaii
6.1 - 6.8 Berkeley and San Francisco, CA
6.9 - 6.14 Anchorage and Kenai, Alaska (King Salmon and Halibut fishing)
6.15 - 6.19 Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, MD
6.20 - 6.25 home in southern cali
6.26 - 7.31 Singapore - internship
7.14 - 7.16 weekend trip to Bangkok, Thailand
7.21 - 7.23 weekend trip to Hong Kong, China
7.28 - 7.31 long weekend in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
8.1 - 8.7 Tokyo, Japan
8.10 - 8.12 NYC
8.12 - 8.20 Caribbean - Bahamas, Grand Cayman, Bermuda
Cheers,
Grace

Welcome, sounds like a great summer.
What sort of internship are you doing in Singapore?
We lived in Japan for three years, but were way up north at the top of Honshu, only spent a few days each in Tokyo and Kyoto, so can't help you too much there. We stayed in ryokans, and in Tokyo I enjoyed the Ueno area, not so crowded as other parts of town, and we found some great hole in the wall restaurants in the residential area around our ryokan - a little cheaper than Ginza!
A couple of tpunks have spent more time in that part of the country, I'm sure you'll hear back from them specifically, especially if you post questions directly in the "Asia" forum.
For a longer visit, I would definitely recommend heading up north to Aomori Prefecture, but if you only have a week, it's too far to travel, with so much to see in the Tokyo/Kyoto area.

Welcome Grace!!
I think you might find your weekends all too short for your excursions, but take advantage while you can - sounds great. I have been to Singapore, HK and Bangkok so if you have any specific questions, feel free to ask. Just so you know, you can also fly non-stop from Singapore to Phuket, which is a Thai resort island. You can get flights on Silk Air, which is owned by Singapore Airlines. Enjoy your summer!!

Hey,
thanks for the recs, tumblezweedz. I'm doing a Public Relations internship here in Singapore. I'm just a typical college senior trying to figure out what I want to do with my life The PR thing is interesting, but a bit too much of an "office job" for me.
Cheers,
G

I have a friend who had a PR job - her "office job" gave her the chance to travel throughout northern Canada (Innu territory) while she lived in BC, all over Australia while she lived in Sydney for three years, plus she lived in Mexico for almost a year and in the Canadian Maritimes for about as long, and she got to go to Prague because she worked on the Vancouver/Whistler Olympic bid...so some PR jobs go a little beyond the cubicle confines! Have a great summer.

Welcome! Sounds like you've been having fun...I'm heading back to KL myself today. Maybe we'll bump into each other and not know it. :P
Eat lots of food while you're here though! :D
