KATMANDU, Nepal - King Gyanendra dismissed Nepal's government Tuesday and declared a state of emergency, closing off his Himalayan nation from the rest of the world as telephone and Internet lines were cut, flights diverted and civil liberties severely curtailed. ( continued...)
SO, next big question - in our heroic bid to end despotism and restore freedom for the world over, are we invading tomorrow? Just askin...
I hope none of our TP buddies who've been looking at trekking through Nepal are there right now.

When I left, in April 2004, tension was rising a lot between the King, the government, and the Maoists. The King and the elected government didn't agree on several subjects, strongly enough to have the whole government plus the opposition parties striking together. However, it usually was the Maoists calling almost weekly strikes, and sometimes cutting cities or areas off the rest of the country. Striking was then so frequent, that most of the shop owners started defying the Reds and stay open... Much ado about nothing... then...
A few weeks before my leaving, the Maoists had begun to "attack" touristic zones with small bombs, making minor damages. Nothing to worry about, only warnings of what may come. And later in the year were more damaging attacks in big hotels and buses.
So that's it for the long story.

Thanks for the inside story, my dear. I thought of you immediately when I read Omi's post. That's awful what's going on. I knew about the Maoist guerrillas, but I didn't know about the opposition between government and king.
Looks like one more monarchy in the world is about to go...

I can't even imagine this happening to me. In Belize the government just passed a new budget and it sucks so bad and is so overbearing all the major companies went on strike. So no phones, water, electricity, banks, etc. for a week or more at a time! Its crazy.
