Default Longer in SFO or Cali road trip down the 1

hey guys, just trying to find a flight home, but need to know where to book it from first. Will be in San Fran for three nights(doesn't really seem like enough) with a friend, but then he has a car rented after that to take a 2 day road trip down the Californian coast. I would end up back in LA for a night which i'm not overly enthused about.

so here's the question. More time in SF? or Cali roadtrip down number 1?

I just got back from San Fran actually, and I drove down HWY 1 as far south as Carmel (about 45 minutes South of Santa Cruz) with my ex. It's a really awesome drive and offers tons of awesome views of the coast. San Fran is fun, but the drive could also be really awesome. So I vote for the road trip!

the 1 between san fran and LA is a world onto itself. I love it sooo much. I would definitly crash in santa barbara at the hostel there. It's stellar

well, i suppose i'm gonna have to road trip it then. is there only one hostel in santa barbara? we are gonna stop somewhere along the way, so a stellar hostel would be ideal.

Not sure if there's anything closer to Santa Barbara, but about 1.5 hours south of San Francisco, you can stop off in Santa Cruz and the tpunk hostel search engine came up with 2 hostels:

TravelPUNK.com- Cheap Europe Hostels, Hostals, Eurail Passes: book Santa Cruz, California, USA

From Santa Cruz thought, it's another 4.5 hours to Santa Barbara, so it doesn't exactly cut your trip on the 2nd day any shorter, but it might be your best bet. Not sure if there are any other cities in between San Fran and Santa Barbara that would have hostels. Good luck!

Edit:
There's a hostel in Monterey, CA
